Also the great depression is a time that everyone is poor because of the stock market crash and people not being able to pay back their loans from the banks. So everyone was poor as dirt and all struggled to survive in America during this time.
We also have to think about Lennie and how he prevents George from living a life of his own because Lennie has a childish way of thinking that makes it where he can't live on his own in this world.

Thier main goal to settle down on a ranch after getting enough money. Is one of the best options as they could be in peace and not have to go place to place working. But they have to do a lot of work to get there and if this is the work they plan on doing for a while. This would be a really difficult thing to do because they need somewhere to live and being a migrant worker somewhat ensures them meals and a place to live. It would be risky to try and branch of on there own mainly because of living situations. During this time, the majority of the population were farmers. They could always find work for farms in most areas and it wasn’t hard to join one either. These people could sowly save their income and eventually work their way up and get enough money to possibly own their own land. The big thing for them also wasnt nessesarily to be rich economically, but to be self sufficient and not to work under someone else.
