The benefit of having this environment is that you can be you. I can be me.  No hiding behind social media. No physical, or virtual photo-shop to hide blemishes. Can’t hide in the corner of texting either which can prove to be vices to advance the agenda of isolation and depression.  Lesson learned is the beautiful, wealthy, single, all have problems too. I chose to work with this agency because of the relationship I have with the pastor. They encourage, facilitate and connect churches in their work to fulfill God’s mission of reconciling the world to himself. This is a very wonderful place for kids and adults. When I arrived on the five-acre facility I was impressed. I thought I was headed to a camp fully outfitted with tents and activities comparable to Boy Scouts. However instead of learning to build a fire from wood soon to burn out; kids learned to embrace a spiritual fire that would burn for life. This experience gave me a clearer understanding of the events of the past. For others that might not be facing the same issues I faced is not what cause me to relate it is a different situation the similar impact. I can now reach deeper and know that there are programs that exist to point those in my community and I, to such a network of people who care.  I also learned never to under estimate nor look down on a kid who struggles with hate, rebellion, sexual orientation, or drugs. I spoke about some of the characters in the bible like, Joshua, Moses, and Abraham. We also played musical chairs (my first time) at the request of one of the youngsters. Our creative side came to light when we created prayer boxes and handed out gifts on the 4th in observation of Independence day. The gifts included: Sun-visors, wind fans, and food for the hungry bellies. My service: I taught children ages; 6-15 about some of the character in the bible.  We played musical chairs. As a result, they were given the tools to effectively handle their life situations. I personally was impacted because by-and-large my experience has been with the older of the youth, age ranged (16-21). This opportunity gave me the ability to connect and realize another world of little people out here face issues on their level concerns which are near and dear to them.  ]]> 2016-07-07 09:31:26 UTC https://padlet.com/dallasbowtie/q93wybzdja75/wish/116049229 dallasbowtie https://padlet.com/dallasbowtie/q93wybzdja75/wish/116051347 My appreciation for service learning left me wishing that such program would have been available years ago.  Students have the opportunity to see the world throughout someone else’s view. It is through this type of experience we learn compassion. To serve, visiting a nursing home, animal shelter etc., are opportunities that grow servant-leaders who share and love on one another. To better state the impact that the children experienced is best quote; “My eyes have truly been opened to the point where I now see Christianity not as a religion anymore but more of an everlasting relationship with the most-high.” -camp kids
