Science subjects including Biology prepare students for global citizenship by fostering international mindedness. For example, the study of Ecology provides opportunities for students to examine the role of humans in the ecosystem and encourages them to think about the consequences (both locally and globally) of various disturbances (e.g. greenhouse gas emissions, overfishing, deforestation etc). Studying genetics and evolution demonstrates to students the connectedness of living things and the ancestry that we share.

All students benefit when they can examine an issue from multiple perspectives. When a safe and supportive classroom environment based on mutual respect has been fostered, students from different backgrounds, nationalities and faiths can share knowledge, engage in robust discussion and debate. Students learn to consider issues from the viewpoints of various stakeholders, evaluate bias, formulate arguments and reach compromises and agreements on real case studies and hypothetical scenarios.

Students can be helped to understand the importance of international mindedness by exploring topics that have global significance, for example biotechnologies (e.g. genetically modified organisms), ecological issues, advances in genetic science etc. Students will learn how these topics will impact on them individually, locally within Australia and globally and consider the perspectives of multiple stakeholders. Over time they will gain the skills to make informed decisions that consider global consequences.
