I am currently a final Information Systems major at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST). Studying in Hong Kong has allowed me to open my eyes to the financial industry. During my recent internship at a Korean Investment Bank in Hong Kong as an IBD summer analyst, I have conducted numerous market researches on commercial, residential real estate, and infrastructure markets while evaluating different alternative investment proposals.

Summer Internship (2021)


The Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) is now offering internship to undergraduates to equip them with practical work experience and general understanding of the HKMA’s roles and functions. The duration of the internship is normally two months during June to September.

Situation: During my most recent internship at an American M&A advisory company, I got an opportunity to present the DCF model of our client with two sales projection assumptions to our North America region head. 

Task: I had about a day to complete the presentation slides to which I had no prior experience. I have managed to outline the significant differences in the two sales projections, however, I had to spend the majority of the time consuming and understanding the DCF model I was provided with. To make things worse, the manager changed the meeting time and asked me to present it a few hours earlier than the initial deadline. Throughout the preparation process, all I was worried about was the feedback of my manager on my work as he had high expectations of my work. 

Action: I have tried my best to pull myself together and explain the impact of each projection assumption and how it changed the model taking my time. The North America region head stopped me in the middle of my presentation and told me that he got what he needed. 

Result: Although I was slightly disappointed that he did not let me finish the whole slides, I later found out that they did not expect me to complete the entire task, and all they wanted to see was how I manage my time and how I approach on completing the given task. As a result, I have received an offer with positive feedbacks from my managers.

Situation: As a senior in high school, I was involved in the planning and implementation of one of the city's largest school fests.
Task: As part of the organizing team, I was tasked with finding sponsors for the event in the months leading up to it as well as handling the security and logistics on both the fest days
Action: In order to find sponsors, I created and led a small team of 5 and together we drafted up pitch idea and proposals. We sent emails and I also met with a few companies to secure 3 different sponsors for the event. To handle security and logistics, I created and led a team of 25 people. I split them up according to different zones at the fest (MUSIC, THEATRE, FOOD, MAIN STAGE etc) and created communication threads so there was a clear flow of information across the zones.
Result: The fest was highly successful and was one of the largest in the city. Situation: When I worked in the XX company, my team was preparing for the quarterly report and we were stretching ourselves to meet the deadlines.

Task: My task was to fill in the information of projects into our profit-calculation models. We needed a lot of information from other departments but they delayed. It was nearly the deadline for submitting the report so I rushed when drafting my work. Later, I found that the estimated profit generated by the model was not identical to our previous calculations, which showed that I might have made a mistake. So, I had to find out and correct the mistake as soon as possible.

Action: It was not easy for me to read through a lot of numbers within a limited time, especially when I was quite nervous.  I tried my best to concentrate and stay calm and checked every number again carefully.

Result: Finally, I finished my work accurately on time and my supervisor was satisfied with my work. He included it in the report that was presented to the board of directors.

Situation: 
Back then, I was in charge of conducting the branch reconciliation, which is basically cross-checking all the transaction records in their retail bank branches to make sure the electronic records are consistent with hard-copy vouchers.

Task:
The work itself involved a lot of entering excel formulas and copy and paste work, which was quite repetitive and time-consuming

Action: 
I took the initiative and voluntarily used two lunch breaks to write a vba code that could automate the repetitive part of the process and successfully saved 70% of the time. This has very been done by any other colleagues before so it showed some creativity in me using the skillsets I have to solve existing problems.

Result: 
Eventually, I saved 70% of the time for branch reconciliation by automating part of the process using excel vba. My boss was really happy about the improvement and decided to make it part of the standard procedure since then

During my time in an organisation that helps recruit international talents for local companies, me and our team in general has experienced a low response rate from cold emails sent to companies. It was quite devastating to the organisation since with no sales it means no money earned.
Task
As the person-in-charge of the sales department, I have to think of new strategies to solve this pressing problem.
Action
I have researched on different successful companies that generated huge amount of sales and summarised their stories. Then, I have come up with strategies to change cold email title that states our purpose right away and shortened our content so as to catch company's attention. 
Result
Conversion rate doubled after using my strategies and at last our team has achieved our sales goal.

Situation: I was the executive member of XYZ society which I was responsible for the recruitment and onboarding of new members

Task: I had to design the agenda of a 3-day induction conference for new members, which was my first time designing an agenda for such a large scale physical event.

Action: I spent the entire week brainstorming and discussing my thoughts with other executive members, and worked late till midnight for an entire week to complete the agenda, coming up with a very smooth logical and emotional flow. I am very confident that it would be the perfect agenda for our induction conference.

Result: When I took the agenda to the Chair of the conference, he started evaluating my agenda with quite an intimidating tone, challenging the logic flow as well as the session design, which he believed that the conference objective could not be achieved through the agenda. I feel absolutely frustrated since I paid so much effort in designing it and asked numerous people for feedbacks.

After meeting with the Chair, I started to re-think my previous logic flow towards achieving the objective of the conference. Even though I did not fully agree with the Chair's, I studied his comments and integrate certain aspects which I had previously missed indeed. I humbly except his suggestions and also expressed my idea towards some of his points. This has been a rewarding experience despite the frustration, which I have many new realisations and takeaways.

Action: 
I drafted the methodology, collected and cleansed the data. Visualized the data and presented the result to the team.
Result: 
The team found my analysis insightful and was satisfactory. They presented my findings to the global management level of HSBC, which I was really proud of.

Action: As it is a long-term research task that needs to be updated monthly, in order to increase the efficiency of my research task, I marked down several important websites and links that helped me to stay updated, including the website of all the other seven local virtual banks, FinTech websites, startup press, etc. I think starting with such a step helps me to work smart, but not just work hard. There's a month that ZA bank suddenly launched their service ahead of all the other virtual banks that I need to generate a PowerPoint and present to my senior about this ZA bank. So not only I have to make use of all the second-hand information I got from the Internet, but I also download the ZA bank app and did UI/UX testing and research with my own bank account, and generate an all-rounded report for my senior.

Result: My senior was very impressed by my work and my PowerPoint was directly used by my senior to report to the board of directors. I think this experience shows me the importance of working smart especially in a research task that needs a long time of effort. Action:
 As an executive member of the Student Union, I had to make sure the competition can continue and manage the members' emotions. Action: Went ahead with the book sale which was a 3-day affair that required the coordination of all 60 members and different committees to ensure a smooth event.

Result: The event made $12,000 (USD) which was donated to various non-profit organizations around South East Asia for the betterment of women and children.

  2. Try to relax by having a break (avoid being too tired and anxious)
  3. On the next day, I tried to ask my colleagues to help because they were more experienced

Result:
  1. The problem has been solved because my colleagues have discovered that I have missed some new items on the balance sheet.

Situation: I have to finish the presentation of the client.

Task: I have been appoint suddenly before 3 days of the presentation. And I have find out many error in the previous version. So I have to redo it and it is a topic that I am not familiar with.

Actions: I was helpless at the beginning. But there is no way that I can familiar with all the things. My only way is to seek help from my leader and others teammate. As the topic is about why people refuse to donate money to charity. I have to look in deep of how the donation industry work. After I sum up all the feed back of my leader on promoting donation. I realised that the key problem is there is low transparency on donated money and how many money is used to administration fee.

Result: luckily I got the help from my team and come up a suggestions of putting a pie chart of the usage of the donation in the information booklet to raise the donation.
