They wanted to get the most "first to do this," they wanted to be the first to reach places, and they wanted to have the most scientific discoveries. The two countries wanted to be the best in all of these categories. This caused a reversion back to rockets because of their simplicity compared to shuttles. We still use rockets today because of their simplicity, but we are still trying shuttles. From the beginning of the space race satellites have been used. They used to be mostly for research, but now, the majority are for improving life on Earth with things like internet connections and GPS. Even though there are mostly civil use satellites there are still many research ones.
