Xiomara begins to find her voice when she feels she can speak her truth. I'm not saying that in a way to be like, oh she can speak when she wants to. Im saying, with her poetry she knows how she feels, but i feel like she will express that when she feels its the right person. She would like to speak up to everyone but i guess you could say she is moving at her own pace. An example of when she used her voice to share her truth and thoughts was at church, when she shared that she feels a passage they were reading was kinda stupid. Then you'll see that Father Sean goes to talk to her but really, they aren't having a discussion, he is just telling her what he recommends and what he feel is going on. so I believe she decides when to use her voice and who to speak to. Her poetry is what connects her mind and heart to provide a way to find her voice.

Throughout the story, Xio has kept silent from the ones who she knows won't listen to her, but expresses through poetry. At one point in the story, Xiomara starts to have strong feelings with this one boy, Aman. Whenever she hangs out with him, she doesn't fear what she says, Xio's poetry doesn't get held back. This form of communication can express her thoughts and feelings about the environment around her. For example, whenever she is with Aman, she starts describing what they do, whenever alone, in similes and metaphors.

Xiomara starts to find her voice when she expresses her thoughts out loud in Church. This was when Father Sean was going over the story of Eve. "I think it all just seems like bullshit. So I say so. Out loud. To Father Sean." (Acevedo 119) She is usually quiet, "I open my usually silent mouth..." (Acevedo 118) so that's why I think this was when Xiomara started finding her voice.

I feel like Xiomara starts to find her voice by writing poems.I think I know this because by writing poems she has a way to express herself and how she feels. A piece of evidence to support is, "I only know that learning to believe in the power of my own words has been the most freeing experience of my life. It has brought me the most light".
