The Youth Survey is Australia’s largest annual survey of young people. Now in its 21^st year, this survey provides much needed insight into the wellbeing of young people and gives them a voice to express their concerns on issues important to them. Findings from the survey have played an important role to support schools, organisations and governments to develop policies and programs for young people. 

 

The key focus areas in the 2022 Youth Survey include: mental health and wellbeing, housing and the impact of COVID-19. 

 

The survey is open to young people between the ages of 15-19 and takes approximately 15 minutes to complete. 

 

As part of our commitment to ensuring organisations get the most out of their participation, we will provide a FREE individualised report based on your organisation, LGA or postcodes (conditional on receiving at least 100 responses, unless another amount is arranged). 

 

These reports detail key findings specific to your young people and compare them against state-level results. As we continue to face uncertainty around COVID-19, these reports can provide helpful insights into how young people in your organisation or area are travelling.

 

 Next Steps:

To get involved all you have to do is complete the Organisation Participation Form. At the end of the form, you’ll be asked if you would like to obtain an individualised report. Tick “Yes” and you will receive a unique code for your organisation via email. This code will help us track the number of responses coming from your organisation.

Our first  speaker is Lawrence Shuruma a retired Perth Glory player who’s played in many teams all over the world as well as the Australian all-star team. Lawrence is now a high-performance coach and mentor running his own football academy (Football Method International Football Academy in Perth, Australia | Soccer Academy Perth (footballmethodint.com)) He is known for creating and helping athletes reach their full potential through daily football mentoring.

 

Our second speaker Adam Pryztula created Armed For Life  https://armedforlife.com.au/  in 2012. It is a social enterprise driven by the goal of helping children, teenagers and adults develop resilience and increase their wellbeing and mental health. Adam says “Too often we struggle with issues such as depression, anxiety and suicidal thoughts without reaching out and getting the help we need. We strive to make it acceptable to ask for that help.” Adam works with students to increase resilience, improve self-esteem, wellbeing and mental health and provide tools to better relationships. He is particularly interested in working with disengaged young people.

MIND-CRAFT is a psychoeducational program that has been developed as an early intervention and prevention program with a strong focus on building resilience.  It is a 6-week innovative social and emotional learning program focused on helping children put together a collection of anxiety management skills and coping strategies that build their confidence and self mastery to improve and strengthen the emotional structure of their lives.  This 1^st pilot is for children who are currently in Year 7.

This 2 – day course teaches adults how to provide initial support to a person who is developing a mental health problem, experiencing a worsening of an existing mental health problem or in a mental health crisis:  The Mental Health First Aid is given until the appropriate professional help is received or the crisis resolves.

The course covers developing mental health problems and mental health crises as below.

 

Developing Mental health Problems 

• Depression

• Anxiety problems

• Psychosis 

• Substance use problems 

Mental health crises including:-

• Suicidal thoughts and behaviours

• Non-suicidal self-injury

• Panic attacks

• Traumatic events

• Severe psychotic states

• Severe effects from alcohol or other drug use

 

By the end of the course participants will feel confident  to understand the signs and symptoms of mental health problems, where and how to get help and what sort of help has been shown by research to be effective. They will have improved knowledge of mental illnesses and their interventions, knowledge of appropriate mental health first aid strategies, and confidence in providing mental health first aid to individuals with a mental health problem.

The Camp is a free, adventure based event open to ten boys aged 12-16 in the Capel/South West region. 

 

The overnight camp will include: motorcycle lessons from professional coaches, camping, camp cooking and outdoor teambuilding activities. 
 The event is an opportunity for local boys to enjoy a fun & safe weekend focused in adventure, where they will learn new skills and build confidence in a supportive and knowledgeable environment. 

 

No prior experience with motorcycles, or camping is necessary. In fact we encourage those with no experience to apply! 

All equipment and protective gear will be provided.

Now in its 21^st year, the survey seeks the views and experiences of young people on a range of important topics. The key focus areas for 2022 include; mental health and wellbeing, housing, discrimination and COVID-19. 

The survey closes 31 August 2022.  

By participating in the survey, you will be helping us reach more young people and every additional survey completed helps us gain a clearer picture of what is happening for the emerging generation in our country.

Relationships between students and teachers at school are very important. Research has shown that students perform better at school when they have good relationships with their teachers. Positive relationships can also help students deal with stress or other challenging life events. 

 

Our research team from UWA want to understand more about how these relationships develop by talking to students in year 7, 8 or 9. Participation will involve an online interview (via Zoom) that will take approximately 30 minutes. All students will receive a $25 gift voucher as a thank you for their time.

Community Storytelling Workshops are being delivered across the South West region in November by Advocacy WA as part of the Community Disability Advocacy Project. This is an opportunity for the community to highlight and prioritise issues and challenges faced by people with disability in the local community and develop action plans to address these. We will consider the beliefs, learnings, values, challenges, goals and relationships specific to people in this community.

Advocacy WA, in association with People With disabilities WA (PWdWA), is rolling out a co-designed local disability network across the South West, in the local government areas of Harvey, Busselton, Augusta-Margaret River and Bridgetown-Greenbushes. The network will bring together people with an interest in identifying and seeking solutions to issues and challenges at a local level. We will train and equip people to advocate for themselves and their communities to improve and/or increase accessibility options for people living in the South West.
