1. Using textbooks or reading materials in literature representing various cultural groups in the classroom such as books written by authors of diverse cultures, reading materials on diverse cultures (Janakiraman et al., 2019). An example of multicultural literature is “Aunt Flossie’s Hats (and Crab Cakes later)” by an African American woman author named Elizabeth Fitzgerald Howard. She wrote also other family stories featuring middle- and upper- class African Americans teachers and doctors in the early 1900s. It is important to show students that African Americans are part of various socioeconomic groups and professionals as well (Reading Rockets, n. d.).

2. Incorporating students’ interests and cultures in the curriculum such as sports, music and dancing to connect to mathematics topics (Tanase, 2020). For example, for Hispanic children soccer is very important. Educators can use soccer games to teach mathematics concepts to young children such as numbers, counting, addition while scoring goals and even the name of shapes on the soccer ball.

3. Offering interactive virtual trips that align with the curriculum (Edutopia, 2024). Educators can include virtual trips that enhance and connect students to curriculum and voices that are often missing in traditional history classes. For example, a virtual visit from a Tuskegee airman telling the history of World War II can leave an impact in the students’ lives and provide exceptional viewpoints into historical facts (Edutopia, 2024). Another example is showing students a documentary on Chinese immigrants’ contributions on building railroads in the west.

4. Facilitating student-led inquiry and experiential learning in science (Edutopia, 2023). Give students the opportunity to plan and conduct their own experiments and explorations making the learning meaningful. For example, during physics lessons, students investigate sound and energy through musical instruments of various cultures and how they use the concepts of sound to create music (Edutopia, 2023). Students could use musical instruments of their own cultures.

1. Integrating into the curriculum students’ experiences and incorporating their cultural background and prior knowledge by giving students the opportunity to share stories, histories, and socio-cultural perspectives (Flory et al., 2024). For example, most countries in the world use the metric system for measurement while in the United States, the U.S. customary system or imperial system is used for measurement. They are two very different systems of measurement. Teachers should take that into consideration and adapt and tailor the curriculum to help the student succeed.

2. Promoting cooperative learning which has been considered a critical tool for culturally responsive teaching (CRT) because cooperation and collaboration are important in educating minority students (Tanase, 2020). Cooperation plays a major role in most groups of color learning styles (Tanase, 2020). Collaborative problem-solving and connections between people is essential in the cultures of these groups.

3. Assessing students using various assessment methods and allowing students to demonstrate their knowledge in different ways taking into consideration the students’ beliefs, values, experiences, and strengths.

4. Activating prior knowledge by connecting new information with the students’ experiences and cultural backgrounds.

Some other strategies for adapting teaching styles to meet the diverse needs of learners are:

· Differentiation

· Scaffolding

· Flexible grouping

· Visualization

· Providing technology

· Providing extra time

1. Creating a library in the classroom with books of various cultures, books written by diverse authors such as different races, genders, and books with people with disabilities.

2. Supporting English language learners by allowing them to use their native languages in learning process and assignments, use translator devices, express themselves through arts and by providing students with multilingual texts and labels of items in the classroom in English and the languages of students in the classroom (Columbia University, 2024). In addition, teacher can greet the students in the language of their preference, in English or their native language.

3. Involving students in establishing the norms and expectations. Ensure that students understand that respecting each other in every aspect is crucial in the classroom. Model inclusive and respectful behavior.

4. Displaying art from various cultures in the classroom and using music from various cultures, especially from cultures of children in the classroom.
