History Repeats Itself
By Titaburi

This is an artwork made of gold-plated nutmeg, which signifies the value of the spice several hundreds of years ago. The battleship shows how people fought for these spices, and for wealth after owning them. The ship and the nutmeg sculptures are carefully done and I like the meanings behind it.

Artwork: Households of the South by Wu Guanzhong

Describe

This artwork depicts houses of a southern Chinese community. There are houses in traditional Chinese style on the back ground, people in the middle ground and a river in the foreground. The artwork is painted and the strokes of brushes are evident when you look closely.

Analysis

The artist made use of simple strokes and dotted some parts of the artwork. The different colour gradient is also obvious when it is observed close up. The technique is very simple yet it creates different kinds of view when observed closely or from further away. The artwork may not make sense and lacks details when you look closely, however it offers you a totally different image when you don't focus on the details. This adds on to a interesting point in the artwork. The artwork mainly consists of dark coloured but there are flashes of pink, yellow and blue in the artwork which can catch the eye of the observers, representing the vibrant coloured clothes of the Chinese community and culture.

Interpretation

This artwork may represent the seemingly dull residences of the area, however the flashes of vibrant colours represents the inner beauty of the people there and the lively cultures they have. The fact that he artwork don't seem to make sense in close range but it makes sense when observed at a different perspective reminds us to look things differently, not just stick to one thing and you may never find the solution, try to find alternatives.

Judgment

This artwork may not appear very visually pleasing to some people, the technique is very interesting as only simple brushes are used. It also provides different looks form different positions. However, it lacks details because of the technique used.

This artwork inspired me because it is constrained to one type of colour that is meant to being to the audience a specific kind of feel. It is a self-portrait in the form of a photograph. The colour combination in this artwork is mainly the violet and pink side. Therefore, the audience will immediately get the message of what kind of person the artist is through the colour combination. In this artwork, the pink theme tells the audience that the artist is girlish and loves to rest on the bed. The props used in this artwork are also very creative and good to the environment. It is mainly made up of recyclable materials like paper or newspaper. Thus, this artwork inspired me to make use of colours to tell the story and be creative when it comes to materials used.

This artwork inspired me because of how the artwork looks like from different angles and how the message itself relates to the artwork. From far, it may just look like half a human's face, however, when you come closer, you can see many many pictures which make up the artwork. The pictures are the perspectives of the artist's mother and they form part of her gazing at the audience. This struck me as it sends a strong message telling me that things will look different from perspectives of others. Do not only think about yourself, think about how hard it is for your parents to take care of you and think about how they feel when you play your phone too much. This inspired me as it is very interesting and creative for the artist to portray such a meaningful message in such a brilliant piece of art. I will learn to do so in the future.

This artwork inspired me not only because of the extraordinary skills of the artists, but also how they make use of colours to portray different characters and activities with their own unique style and feeling. For example in the first picture, having fun maybe made up of mostly of warmer colours while getting their results are of colours that are cooler such as green. In the second picture, different colours are used to portray the irony in the actions of the characters compared to the school motto. Each part of the comic has different atmosphere and colours to send a message to the audience. It is also very meaningful in terms of showing the imperfections of students in the school. Nobody is perfect, but we are not. Thus, this inspired me more to make use of colours to portray feelings in my future artworks.
