Case studies - Cradle to Cradle

1) What is the difference between a circular economy and cradle to cradle concept?

The circular economy is an economic system that seeks to reduce resource use and minimize waste by promoting strategies such as recycling and reuse. It focuses on the overall system of resource flow. Cradle to Cradle is a specific design framework that guides the selection and use of materials in products. It values the use of materials that are either biodegradable or endlessly recyclable, aiming for products that have a positive impact on the environment.

2) What are the main issues of petroleum based plastics on society today?

Environmental degradation, plastic pollution, waste management challenges, microplastic contamination, and reliance on non-renewable resources

3) What are the benefits of bio-plastics?

they have a lower carbon footprint, releasing fewer greenhouse gases during production, and they can biodegrade and reduce plastic waste and environmental pollution.

4) What are some issues that the bioplastics industry face and why?

The availability of feedstock limits the industry's scale up production which decreases cost. Other challenges include high research, competition from established petroleum-based plastics and inconsistent biodegradability in different environments, and there are no requirements for bioplastics.

5) How can consumers make sure their products are really cradle to cradle?

To know that a product is really cradle to cradle, consumers can look for certifications like the Cradle to Cradle Certified label. They can also research the materials and manufacturing processes used, choose products made from recycled or renewable materials, support companies with transparent sustainability practices, and prioritize products that are designed for durability, recyclability, and safe disposal.

6) Can you find an example of a true cradle to cradle product and justify it?

One example of a cradle to cradle product is the Econyl nylon fabric made by Aquafill. It is created with recycled fishing nets and other nylon waste, and it can be endlessly regenerated into new nylon products, demonstrating a looped recycling process which also minimizes waste.

7) Can you find an example of something that may seem cradle to cradle but is most likely cradle to grave?

An example could be a phone. While phones can be recycled to recover some materials, the complex nature of their components, frequent upgrades, and being outdated by new phones, often lead to their disposal rather than efficient reuse, making phones more cradle to grave products.
