There were many problems in the gilded age. But the main one is child labor. As stated in the child labor slide show in google classroom, there are two main reasons why children worked and that's for family money and the factory owners paid them less.

At this time there were many immigrants coming in from all over the place that were easily taken advantage of. In the immigration in the gilded age slide show in google classroom, it talks about how these immigrants come here with nothing and live in terrible conditions. This makes them very desperate for money making them work for any pay and get taken advantage of. This caused business owners to hire them for low pay and take advantage of them

Progressive Era

This was a very important era for the workers that helped many. This was the start of Unions which are probably the most important people at this time. As show in the Miners video watched in class, these Unions could gather up in huge groups and do crazy and amazing things. These Unions were made of workers who believe in better work, they would try to be stopped by force such as guns but they stood strong. This is how the work would get better, how people would win the war with the Robber Barons and Captains of Industry. But as seen in the Miners video as well even in violent times such as war they would never fully get what they wanted even when they ignored their diversity and joined together as one minority. There was also individuals who accomplished so much for these people with so little. People like Jacob Riis and Upton Sinclair are great examples of this. Jacob Riis was a photographer who took pictures of these peoples homes showing their living conditions making people care more about this and help them. Upton Sinclair was a journalist who exposed the filthiness of the meat-packing factories and the terrible work they do.

There are many things to be learned from these events. But the main thing that I learned from this is that working is our economy and without it america would be nothing and without the laws to protect these workers, america would be a terrible place like it was when there was nothing to protect these workers in this time. Overall economy is one of america's most important factors and it needs to be helped.

This time period was not just a problem time for america, but also for other countries. Iraq and the middle east, as stated in the US Department of Labor, in 2015 9.2 million kids between the ages 5-17 are taking part in illegal child labor which is about 8% of the children population. This also takes place in countries like Yemen and Zimbabwe which are right across the Atlantic from us. This time period is repeating itself in many places throughout the planet and will probably be repeated in many other places to come.
