Growing up I was always taught to respect my elders. They were fragile people who didn’t deserve to be disrespected. I never wanted to disrespect the elderly because they had more wisdom than I did and had already gone through life. Especially, when it came down to my parents, parents because they were truly people I cared about and I would hate seeing them disrespected by those younger than them. So I go living life knowing that those elderly people are someone’s grandpa or grandma and treat them with as much respect as they deserve.

In my family conflict was dealt with directly. It didn’t matter how upset you were with that person you have to try and resolve your issues right then and there. It isn’t good for you to burry that anger because you could be the one hurt rather than the other person. My grandma taught me that even if that person treated you horribly you still have to show grace because at the end of the day we are all human and sometimes we just have bad days.

Growing up in a Hispanic household you weren’t really rewarded for good behavior. For example, getting good grades was expected and getting anything lower than an A was not an option. You had to work hard and if you didn’t then that was on you. However, graduating was an exception. Going out to eat with your family was your reward for doing your best throughout those years in school and you deserved to be celebrated. In my case, since my grandparents risked their lives to give my family a better chance at being successful in life I knew I had to do my best to succeed and doing anything less wasn’t even a thought in my mind. I have to show my grandparents that them coming here wasn’t a mistake and I will do whatever I can to succeed in life.

I want to preface that the way I was punished wasn’t wrong and in my family it is normal and I think I turned out to be better because of it. Growing up in Hispanic household we had very many punishments whether it was being hit with a belt, hand, or chancla we received it all. It wasn’t like there wasn’t a reason for being punished, if we lied, stole, or just disrespected our parents we were punished. I think that because of those ways of discipline I knew not to do those things anymore and I became a better person because of it. I think because of those punishments I am very respectful to everyone, I take under consideration other people’s feelings, and I know to treat others the way I want to be treated. I’m not saying that beating your child is something your need to do because there can be other ways of discipline but I also think that talking to your kid in a soft tone wont do the job. This is because I think that being soft with your child will end up with them disrespected their parents and those around them and I have encountered those people and most of the time they weren’t punished as kids.
