Why is the coal industry on the decline in the first place?

There are three main reasons why the coal mining industry is failing. The first reason is that technology is catching up with the workers , meaning that mining has become more and more automated over the years.the more technology advances , the fewer manual workers are needed. the second reason is that natural gas fracking is cheaper than coal mining and has been an aggressive competitor leaving coal behind in the market share. the final reason and the reason trump thinks the coal industry is on the decline is Obama's various rules he placed on the coal industry, making it more costly to run plants. this is also a reason that pushed companies to burn natural and renewable energy.

What does trump hope to do with the coal industry and what has he already done?

What Trump hopes to accomplish with the coal industry is to restore its economic value. He wants coal to fuel the United States. With his vast reformations he hopes to re employ thousands of laid off coal miner. A direct quote from trump states, " I am eliminating this rule,i am continuing to keep my promise to the american people to get rid of wasteful regulations that do absolutely nothing but slow down the economy , hamstring companies, push jobs to other countries,”. he also added,“This is a major threat to your jobs and we’re going to get rid of this threat. We’re going to fight for you.” this is what trump has done so far to help his cause. he signed a congressional review act resolution on Obama's various environmental regulations.there are a few flaws in trumps plan. Companies will forced to choose between re opening up old coal fired plants and making them cleaner, or to switch the power sources to natural gas or green gas sources like wind and solar. with this decision companies are tasked to make, many of them may find it cheaper to open new plants than to re open old ones and getting them to be more efficient.

The clean power plan is a policy aimed at the combating climate change. The surface mining stream protection rule was instilled to protect streams and ground water from coal mining . This rule will protect 6,000 miles of streams and 52,000 acres of forests primarily in Appalachia .it will also require companies to restore streams once their work is done and monitor water quality.
