Georgians began identifying themselves during the Second Great Awakening. By the 1830's the denominations became the largest in the state. Due to denominations, many converted to Baptist or Methodist churches. Both used revivals and camp meetings to help increase their membership. The Methodists used circuit riders to move preachers place to place to preach. The Baptist believed that each church should be independent, with its own preacher. The camp meetings were very vital to increase the popularity and the amount of members. The circuit riders were also important because it helped transport preachers to different towns to preach at different places.

largest in the state.
