Chapter 2 Assignments

Assignments are known before they are chosen for Twelves because when they are still Elevens the elders observe them. Some Elevens take interest in certain things and the elders observe them and discover what they are interested in doing. This is how they determine what assignment each Twelve will receive. For example, when Jonas' father was younger he spent his free time helping with the newborn children, therefore the elders assigned him to be a nurturer.

Chapter 3 Apple

The apple symbolizes how everybody has their flaws but some are just more visible than others. An apple rots from the inside out. Some apples might be rotting on the inside but look perfectly fine on the outside. This can relate to the people in the utopia. For example, someone might look fine on the outside but they are actually upset, mad, or confused. An example is when Jonas didn't talk to his family at dinner about how he felt after stealing the apple and he acted like everything was fine. Some apples are also rotting on the outside, just like some people in the utopia have more visible flaws. For example, Asher has more visible flaws like not having good hand eye coordination.

Chapter 5 Stirrings

The Utopia has designed perfection by eliminating certain things. They eliminate certain things so people don't feel uncomfortable or different from others. For example, Jonas just had the stirrings, which is when you fantasize in a dream about a strange thing, you deeply want that thing to happen, and that thing makes you feel good but also a little bit confused. This is how they start to love or show affection to people. Many boys and girls at the age of 11 or 12 start to get these. This can make that person feel uncomfortable or different because some people might have not gotten them yet. To eliminate this problem, the utopia created a pill that you have to take everyday to get rid of them. This prevents people from loving another person. This is a flaw in the system of the utopia because the person will still be different because they will be taking the pill and some other people might not be. Asher and some of the other people in Jonas's group have been taking the pill before him.

The Receiver's House

The Receiver's house is different from the other houses in the community because it is more luxurious and has more features. For example, instead of straight legs on a table, the receiver has curved table legs with a decoration at the foot. The most obvious difference is that instead of the receiver having 3 books like everybody else, he has his walls lined with bookshelves. These differences show that the Receiver is a very honorable person. The receiver also has locks and a switch to shut off the speaker. This shows that he needs privacy

The process of receiving memories starts with Jonas taking off his tunic and laying on the bed face down. The Receiver places his hands on Jonas's bareback. Jonas began to relax and breathe deeply, before he knew it he was in the memory. Jonas's first memory was the memory of snow where he rode a sled downhill.

"I thought there was only now"

When Jonas says this he means that he thought that there is and was only ever one world, the world he lives in now. He thought that people always lived like they did in his community today. Jonas was wrong, the world used to be different. There used to snow and sunshine, but they created too many problems. They needed to eliminate them by using climate control. This is not a good way to live. Just because something has problems it can still make people happy or give them joy. Eliminating these things may help with things like agriculture or driving, but won't bring joy to humans.

Jonas is surprised when The Giver turns the speaker off and locks the door because he has never seen anybody do it before. In the rest of the community they don't have locks or the ability to shut the speaker off. They can't get any privacy. Jonas is also surprised because he didn't think that anybody was allowed to have that much privacy. I can infer that the rest of the people in the community don't have much privacy. They can't do anything without someone knowing. That's also why they have to be so proper, careful, and follow all of the rules all of the time.

The title of the book is significant because I can tell that The Giver is going to be a major and important character in the rest of the book. Without The Giver, Jonas, The Receiver, won't be able to receive memories. I infer that receiving memories is very important and plays a big role in the community some way. "The Giver" as a book title symbolizes that when The Giver gives Jonas memories it is a major event and will lead up to many more.
