While reading this page, I was shocked, I wouldn't have ever guessed that the fifth person Eddie meets in heaven would be the shadow he saw running around in the fire while he was fighting in the Vietnam war. When reading about Eddie fighting in the Vietnam war, while he was claiming he saw a shadow in the hut, that was engulfed in flames, I personally believed Eddie was hallucinating because of trauma, and anxiety. When I read this page (188), I was actually very surprised that Eddie was not hallucinating and there was an actual figure in the hut that was on fire, and that figure was a little Asian Girl named Tala. Eddie's final revelation shows the painful truth behind his biggest guilt. All throughout the book. Eddie carried this haunting memory from the war with him, and now that Tala confirms it, it makes Eddie's guilt so much more stronger. Tala's presence gives Eddie a chance to confront and finally understand the actions of his consequences, as her forgiveness is not quite shown yet, it's a part of his healing that follows.
