During act one there are many mood changes.Firstly before the inspector arrives everyone is happy and celebrating. "Lighting should be pink and intimate until the inspector arrives, and then it should be harder." This shows the mood is happy, however then once the inspector arrives the lighting changes to being hard, this shows people are full anger as is is demonstrated with the lighting in the room.

Act One of An Inspector Calls is set in the well-furnished but somewhat subtle dining room of a middle-class English family. The play begins with a celebratory, jubilant mood as the engagement of two characters has been announced and finalised. This mood becomes far more sombre and serious upon the arrival of the Inspector - as reflected by the scenery through the change in lighting from a surreal pink to a more mature, straight forward intensity. The Inspector interrogates both Mr Birling and his newly-engaged daughter Sheila in connection with the suicide of a young woman and reveals their roles in her death whilst questioning the social and gender distinctions of 1912. The act ends upon the discovery that yet another family member has a connection to the victim.

Act one:In act one in Inspector Calls we are transported to the grand dining hall in the Birlings' household; the play begins in the middle of a celebration dinner for Shiela Birling and Gerald Croft to celebrate they're engagement. The mood is light and happy, Sheila is what people would call an excited bride-to-be, Gerald however is very focused on being the male that will look after his family, very much like Mr Birling. The light is bright to show that the mood and atmosphere is calm. However Mr Birling comes across as anxious to impress Gerald, we can tell this because he has exactly the same port that Geralds father drinks. The women leave the men to drink their port and Mr Birling has a man-to-man chat with the two younger men,he advises them on the roles of a male in the family and how women should always 'dress to impress'. As Mr Birling is tell them this their maid comes in the room, the atmosphere and lighting changes into a darker scene, this is when we meet the Inspector.

Act one begins with a celebration of the engagement of Sheila Birling and Gerald Croft. During act one Mr Birling lectures Gerald and Eric on how a man needs to look after himself and his family. His lecture is cut short when Inspector Goole enters. The inspector questions Mr Birling and Sheila about the suicide of a young girl named Eva Smith who used to work for Birling until he fired her, and who had lost another job after Sheila used her power to get Eva fired. Mr Birling feels no guilt for letting Eva go while Sheila becomes hysterical when she realises that her actions may have led Eva Smith to commit suicide. Act one ends with the Inspector revealing that Eva Smith went under the name of Daisy Renton, which sparks an involuntary reaction from Gerald that indicates that he knew her too.
