Man and woman arrive at abandoned house. Woman sees something in the window while man remains skeptic.

Thoughts 18.12.18:
It could either be an intro to a longer story or I could somehow manage to make it into a short comic. With this I want to try out an animation technique which will allow me to bring life to comics. I will post examples from youtube.

The story may remain inconclusive as I want to avoid a complete mental halt due to workload.

But I am working on the animation. Decided to mainly use clip studio art ex since it has an animation feature and I am already comfortable with the software. I may possibly use after effects in 'post-production' to add simple effects, depending on time.

I've also decided to scratch the comic book format but the story is the same and I will use my pages as a storyboard.

Since I'm not going for any elaborate type of animation but simple keyframing of certain elements, I have therefore started with the backgrounds and all immovable objects. The animated bits will be added in after. I have made the backgrounds for nearly all 8 frames, which has also helped me evaluate the length of the animation.

There won't be any audio for dialogue since I will still maintain a comic style with each panel/scene. However I will add effects of sounds such as wind blowing or a door creaking open. I will mainly be sourcing my audio clips from freesound.

The idea behind my animation was to translate comic pages into a simple animation. Some aspects I had to compromise with due to the massive workload of drawing so many color images.

I wanted to still keep it simple so I would not overwhelm myself, leaning more on the things I already understand, such as digital drawing and coloring. Yet it was all a new experience to set it up on a timeline, with a lot of tweaking to make sure the frames have enough time to be understood and the dialogue read without it dragging on for too long.

In the program I used the key-framing was thankfully relatively simple but I didn't want to burden it all with too many moving objects since it was still meant to be an animated comic. And the tricky part was also figuring out which parts to move without it looking awkward. The way the program works is that the parts that do not move need to be in a different folder or layer than the animated parts. So drawing images with missing arms only to draw the arms in the animation folder was a bit challenging, especially when having to tweak it so it's not so noticeable.

I was also stupid enough to not understand that the square within the image was basically the 'camera' so my first rendition came out weird and I had to go back in and edit all images. Some of them with freestanding layers.

If I still had some sanity after spending 8+ hours on this everyday for way too long I would also add the zooming in effect once I experiment enough with the camera to understand it. As for more animation as a whole I am not certain what else to do, besides perhaps some blinking. The whole reason for the comic page idea came from my own interest in the field.

I think as a whole, and mostly, as a narrative it works. It's nothing spectacular but it's easy to follow, there is sound and atmosphere in the most basic way. As an animation it is minimal and simple. This was mostly by design. But considering it's a video with moving parts it is still nonetheless an animation of sorts, just a more 'niche' type and not the most action-heavy.

I do not anticipate a high grade for this but I'd honestly just be content with a pass.
