Benzoic Acid is a white crystalline solid. Slightly solublein water. The primary hazard is the potential for environment damage if released. Used to make other chemicals, as a food preservative, and for other uses. Benzoic acid appears naturally in plants. With calcium hydroxide in water, using iron or iron salt as catalyst. The resulting calcium benzoate is converted to benzoic acid with hydrochloric acid. It is also one of the chemical compounds found in castoreum. This compound is gathered from the castor sacs of the North American Beaver. Benzoic Acid is a covalent bond because the molecules are sharing valence electrons to become stable.
Benzoic Acid is a covalent bond because the molecules are sharing valence electrons to become stable.

Since the 16th century benzoic acid is used regularly in food preservation, the treatment of bacterial infections, and combined with other chemicals to create products like repellants and perfumes. The benzoic acid in the medicine actually prevents infections. Benzoic acid is combined with chloride and phosphorus to make chemicals, most of which are poisonous. Benzoic acid also goes into artificial flavors as well as perfume. Benzoic acid can also be safe to consume in small doses in preserved foods.

Benzoic acid is detected in car exhaust gases, and in Japanese cigarettes. So in somecases it can be a useful resource while in other cases it can be a major cost and may led to death. It can be useful by preserving food products. But can be harmful in cigarettes which in many cases can result to death unless treated.

The name came from gum benzoin, which was for a long time the only source for benzoic acid. Benzoic Acid is a food preservative made of weak acids and its salts. Benzoic Acid was discovered in the 16th century. It was first discovered by Nostradamus in 1556 and subsequently by Alexius Pedemontanus in 1560. Also Blaise de Vingere in 1596. Justus von Liebig and Friedrich Wöhler determined the structure of benzoic acid in 1832. After in the 1875 A man named Salkowski discovered the antifungal abilities of benzoic acid. For a longtime after this discovery it was used as a preservation of benzoic containing fruits.

Benzoic Acid is also called Benzene Carboxylic acid. Benzene means a colorless volatile liquid hydrocarbon present in coal tar and petroleum. Carboxylic Acid means an organic acid containing a carboxyl group. So the word Benzene Carboxylic Acid means an organic colorless liquid that contains carboxyl groups. Another name for benzoic acid is Carboxybenzene, E210, and Dracylic Acid.
