The first documentary to explore the role of photography in shaping the identity, aspirations, and social emergence of African Americans from slavery to the present, Through a Lens Darkly: Black Photographers and the Emergence of a People probes the recesses of American history through images that have been suppressed, forgotten, and lost. Our discussant will be Cindy Elizabeth, a freelance portrait and documentary photographer living and working in Austin, TX. Her work explores concepts of culture, history, and symbolism in everyday life.

Imani Barbarin is a disability rights and inclusion activist and speaker who uses her voice and social media platforms to create conversations engaging the disability community. Born with cerebral palsy, Imani often writes and uses her platform to speak from the perspective of a disabled black woman. Ordinary men and women in the Lone Star State confronted directly the twin caste systems to which they had been assigned, transcending the tradition of state-sanctioned racial violence in a bold attempt to transform their communities from the ground up. They built not one but two liberation movements, and they did so, often, in intimate conversation with one another.

The event kicks-off on Saturday, February 19 at 10 am CDT with Underreported: Racial Violence on U.S. Mexico Border in Early 1900s. The panel discussion will feature Sonia Hernández and John Morán González, co-editors of Reverberations of Racial Violence: Critical Reflections On The History Of The Border. The trenchant collection of essays detail systematic, extralegal killings of Mexicans along the US southern border in the 1910s and explores the role of officially sanctioned violence in the history of US nation-building. This panel is cosponsored by PEN America.

Dr. Ayobade holds a joint appointment as an Assistant Professor in Performance Studies and African American Studies at Northwestern University. He studies how embodied forms of popular culture shape the meaning of community, justice, and activism in late 20th century West Africa. He is currently working on the first book-length study of the storied lives of Nigeria’s Afrobeat Queens, an iconic collective of women that gave potency to the activism of famed Nigerian musician, Fela Kuti. Provisionally entitled Queens of Afrobeat: Gender, Play, and the Making of Fela Kuti’s Music Subculture, this work examines how the women of Afrobeat fashioned performance strategies to negotiate agency and visibility when confronted with censure and authoritarianism.

The Emma S. Barrientos Mexican-American Cultural Center (ESB-MACC) will host its first annual MACCnífico! - a celebration of Austin Tejano & Latino music and culture. We will showcase local musicians and performing artists who contribute to Austin’s diverse Latinx art community, inviting the public to celebrate the biggest week of live music in Austin. With live performances, food trucks, on-site activations, and special guests, it will be a “magnificent” display of Austin’s Latinx culture, so in other words, “MACC-nifico”!

Join CAMINOS for a day of art, music, and community dedicated to youth while we explore and embody mental wellness practices.

Join us for a day of art, music, and community dedicated to youth while we explore and embody mental wellness practices facilitated by the teens of the ESB-MACC Caminos Teen Leadership program. On April 8th from 10am-6pm, teens will collaborate with emerging artists, mental health professionals and cultural activists to explore self-expression around the theme of breaking barriers.

Parents are allowed to attend the event during the first and last hour, but we ask that only teens participate in between those times.

The purpose of the conference is to create a safe space for youth to share their thoughts and express their feelings in a teen-centered environment. This event is uniquely created BY teens, FOR teens. Together they will explore questions such as: What barriers do teens, especially Latinx, Black & minority youth face? How do we break those barriers? How can we build resilience and empower ourselves? How do we encourage each other to share our voices? Conference activities include screen printing, art making, a panel with mental health professionals, ancestral healing, teen-facilitated discussions and more. There will be food snacks and exhibitor tables on-site.
Schedule: 10am - 6pm. This event is free for any teen age 13-19 who wants to connect with others through art and culture while embodying mental wellness practices. Please RSVP on Eventbrite (RSVP not required to attend, but those who RSVP will be guaranteed a spot)

What to bring: A blank t-shirt for screen printing. A meal will be provided without a cost. Please come willing to share your voice. Free parking is available on-site. Students may earn volunteer credit at their school for attending if they get pre-authorization from their school and bring any necessary documentation for a staff signature.

Rolling Ryot presents the second installment of Ghost line X, a massive immersive sound and light experience that will be installed on April 15 at the Moody Amphitheater at Waterloo Park as part of the 2023 Fusebox Festival. We invite you to experience this FREE and truly one-of-a-kind sound art experience! The event will run from 7:30-10:00 pm for one evening only.

Spatial audio, sometimes referred to as surround sound, expands sound and music outside the bounds of a typical two-speaker stereo system. The Rolling Ryot experiential arts collective has continually pushed this concept by creating unique spatial sound systems. For Ghost Line X, the team is exploring the idea of a massively wide 15-channel sound system that investigates the creative potential of vector sound: sound in linear, bi-directional motion. Rolling Ryot has commissioned composers to create works inspired by not only the past and present of transportation but to imagine the sonic future of our transportation landscapes. Ghost Line X is a large-scale installation that challenges our current concepts of transportation by addressing the history and future of its various technologies and by engaging the audience to study its complex sonic characters.

Greenbeard - Desert rock from the sun stricken soil of Austin, TX. Greenbeard brings prolific vibrations to the universe via drums, bass, and guitar. Greenbeard has made their mark on the hard rock/psych scene, boasting heavy, heady sounds and high-energy performances since 2014. The band blends early British heavy metal and psychedelia influences with big desert riffs and sedated stoner grooves.
