The Brisbane Arcade

As someone who is not from a large city, walking through one alone is quite daunting I have found, especially a few days ago I found myself in the mist of panic trying to find my way to the shops, as I’m figuring out where I am I immediately saw the Brisbane Arcade as a place of comfort as I’m walking through the busy city. I felt a sense of calm walking through this delicate mesmerising building, hence why I have chosen this interior.

I have chosen this exterior as it is a prominent and capturing view along Brisbane’s queen street mall. The beautiful contrast between the monochromatic art above Zara, to the warmth colour above the wintergarden shopping centre created a geometric but organic atmosphere. As you can see in picture 1 and 2, depending on the angle, the design depicts the view with the use of light

The Park features a large pathway leading to the shrine of remembrance and eternal flame. My observation while walking through the park was that it was somewhere where people came to relax and be silent in the heart of the noise of the CBD. While walking to this site I was overwhelmed with the chaos of commuters and sirens filling the streets, however once I reached the destination the environment quickly turned to the opposite. Gardens filled with flowers, a flat grassy area with statues of history it was a quiet and pleasant place to be, witnessing many people taking time out of their busy day to sit and remember the people who served our country.

The Brisbane Arcade

The Brisbane Arcade, established 100 years ago in 1924, is a beautiful fashion centre in the heart of Brisbane city. It is the oldest shopping centre in Brisbane, which markets a plethora of Brisbane’s most renowned fashion designers and continues to market local and talented designers to this day. The arcade was designed by Richard Gailey JR, who is regarded as one of Queensland’s most important earlier architects. It captures a well-preserved old-style shopping centre, with features that many modern shopping centres still replicate. The use of different materials, wood, stone, and stained glass really captured a luxury feel that most of the shops have in common, the luxury and designer market.

The designers, studio 505, have provided an array of concept drawings which show the style of geometrical pattern displayed in the final building structure. The patterns are a mixture of geographical and natural features morphing from right to left. This ties into the wintergarden mall on the left of 155 queen street, also displaying natural butterfly’s in a more colourful and spacious context.

Anzac Square

Anzac Square, built in 1930, is a significant site dedicated to the men and women who served their country since the boar war. Before the park was built, the site was occupied by the Turrbal and Yugara nations and from 1860 was built as the first non-denominational national school, it had also become the main recruiting depot for enlistment of soldiers during ww1 (anzac square history: anzacsquare.qld.gov.au/about/history)

Indigenous involvement is critical for architectural development, ongoing and learning space in the industry and society.

During peer discussion i learned that country is an ontology; it is a way of being, and designing with country in mind is not an aesthetic but a process that connects to sociopolitical contexts. Designing with country in mind must involve the aboriginal community, who have knowledge and understanding of the land we are using to create with.

Things i learned about the CBD

The CBD, as someone from a small town on the Sunshine Coast, is a very daunting, busy place but full of so many complex atmospheres and social interactions. The interconnected spaces created within the city, long alleyways, buildings on top of buildings and use of small spaces is very different from the spaced-out towns and large areas of flat land at home.

3 things i have learned so far this semester

i have learned that the context of the site is very crucial when it comes to any sort of movement and development; the process of understanding weather patterns, sunlight, social movement and history. this information must be processed first, which is a facinating process because in most cases it is what hinders the design for the site. the social context and history is also very intriguing, with aboriginal context being a major factor as well in the building process which in my opinion from my now knowlegde and understanding very crucial and important facor which should not be overlooked

Design Brief

To create a space that implements peace into the heart of the CBD, while slowing down the foot traffic and allowing the public to appreciate the environment and historical significance around them.

The insertion is to be placed strategically to ensure all types of comfort are accommodated.

Thermal Comfort - satisfaction with temperature and humidity of the surrounding environment. To implement this a structure for shade must be accessible.

Acoustic comfort - satisfaction with the sound level and quality within the environment. A seating structure with a divided area from foot traffic and site is to be implemented for little disturbance, as well as blocking any noise from roads.

Visual comfort - lighting and colour satisfaction in the environment.

Protection from the harsh sun, as well as a safe place to sit at night with lighting surrounding the site. Light materials such as wood or sandstone can accomplish visual comfort. Repetition of visual appearance of surrounding sites can be incorporated.

Ergonomic comfort - the accessibility-f recourses within the environment as well as the physical fit and support of the structure and seating. Wheelchair access and firm structure protecting from the harsh elements such as extreme heat or rain.

Aesthetic comfort - satisfaction with the style and appearance of the environment. Comforting materials and patterns such as wood or light materials such as sandstone and archways can be incorporated to achieve this, as well as natural elements such as grass areas and trees Social comfort - satisfaction with the interaction and communication within the environment. Space between seating to create social comfort, small or larger seating areas, as well as a divider between comforting site and the foot traffic of the CBD.

during the peer discussion we discussed how individuals are taken into consideration in the culture, such as identity, cultural practices, lifestyles, health, wellbeing and personal preferences can be considered when designing in a local place. considering what the local place needs in the process will create that sense of belonging and bring comfort to that specific place and create indentity. it has been scientificaly proven that identity is the key way for better health outcomes, and for aboriginal people their identities are closely linked to country so the starting point is country

What did you learn about your own identity and positionality in relation to spatial design

i learned that the topic of spatial design was for me understanding how spacial design works, involving social perspectives, experiences and backgrounds and how they influence design choices within a space. By evaluating these perspectives i found to create designs easier considering these aspects, resonating more deeply with purpose and experience

i learned that country is such a deep meaning not only to the first nation people but how important it is to consider in everyday life. it has such a deep meaning to every aspect of design and can create positive outcomes socially, economically and environmentally. with this knowledge it can bring such importance and meaning into a design process and to consider every aspect can hinder and change to best suit the place we intend to use
