Baba Martha is a mythical character in Bulgarian folklore.
Every year on March 1 the Bulgarians are decorated with white-red martenitsa. For health, for joy and premonition for the end of winter and the onset of spring. How old is this Bulgarian tradition, hardly anyone can say. Baba Marta is the Bulgarian folklore image of March. She is the only sister of 11 brothers-months in folk concepts. The universal notion is that she is a whimsical old woman who is angry, laughing again. That is why the weather in March is not constant - sunny and warm, then cold and snowy. The martenitsa can be removed at the first sight of a stork, a swallow, a cuckoo or a blooming tree.
Martenitsas are made by two twisted threads - red and white. This colors according to the people's belief has the power of the sun and gives vitality to every being. With Baba Martha and March, many customs and holidays are celebrated, dedicated to the coming spring. Children in Bulgaria like this holiday very much!
