Students face struggles every day that might not be seen at the surface by their peers. In some instances, school is the only place where students receive love and hot meals. While many students are facing struggles at home, they should not have to face these struggles at school. As Texas Educators it is our responsibility to provide a safe environment for all students. This includes developing policies that protect our students from bullying and harassment from others.
Currently, in society and social media, we are seeing more groups of people become more open about the struggles that they face daily. This is an emerging issue that we are seeing in education as students might not be expecting of others. As new judicial laws are passed about groups of people such as same-sex marriage and abortion laws, although students might not be old enough to be affected by these laws themselves, their families may be. As educators, it is our role to protect students from facing harassment and bullying by students because of their emotional decisions and their home lives.
