         <title>Sociocultural Learning Theory</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<ul><li>Lev Vygotsky, a Russian psychologist, has greatly influenced sociocultural theory. His work emerged in the 1920s and 1930s, though it was not translated until the late 1970s. </li><li>Sociocultural theory has several unique foundational concepts, one is that mental processes exist between and among people in social learning settings, and that from these social settings the learner moves ideas into his or her own psychological realm. </li><li>The way in which information is internalized depends on whether it was within a learner’s zone of proximal development (ZPD), which is the difference between a learner’s assisted and unassisted performance on a task. The ZPD refers to a “range” of knowledge that may be out of reach for a person to learn on his or her own, but is accessible if the learner has support of peers or more knowledgeable others. </li><li>Semiotic mediation is another major concept in sociocultural theory. It is a term used to describe how information moves from the social plane to the individual plane. It is defined as the “mechanism by which individual beliefs, attitudes, and goals are simultaneously affected and affect sociocultural practices and institutions. Semiotic mediation involves interaction through language but also through diagrams, pictures, and actions.</li><li>From a sociocultural perspective, learning is dependent on the learners, the social interactions in the classroom, and the culture within and beyond the classroom.</li><li>The concept of scaffolding, which comes out of sociocultural theory, is based on the idea that a task otherwise outside of a student’s ZPD can become accessible if it is carefully structured.</li></ul><div><br>Reference<br>Walle, J.          <title>Classroom Application of Sociocultural and Constructivism Learning Theory</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>- Finding the area and perimeter of a building using manipulatives (tiles) is an example of implementing sociocultural and constructivism in the activity. The student can construct the building using tiles to solve the problem. This activity can be done individually or in groups. <br><br>- STEM activities are the best way to learn have fun at the same time. An example of a STEM activity that implements sociocultural and constructive learning is having students build the tallest tower using toothpicks and marshmallows. <br><br>- In a first-grade classroom, the students learn how to add and subtract using a number line. After they are familiar with the number line, they use cubes to add and subtract two-digit numbers. Students can do this activity in groups, and each group has three problems to solve. The group has the option to use a number line and cubes. </div>]]></description>

         <title>Constructivist Theory</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>- Constructivism is rooted in the cognitive school of psychology. Jean Piaget introduced the notion of mental schema and the cognitive development theory. Constructivism is the notion that children are creators of their own learning.<br><br>- Piaget suggested that schemas can be changed by assimilation and accommodation. Accommodation is when a new concept does not fit with the information that already exists, so the brain replaces the existing schema. Assimilation occurs when a new concept fits in with prior knowledge.<br><br>- Reflective thought allows people to modify their existing ideas and incorporate new ones. Reflective thought is also called prior knowledge. Existing schemas are often referred to as prior knowledge.<br><br>- People construct their own knowledge based on their prior knowledge or already existing knowledge. The brain applies prior knowledge to make sense of new information. We use materials to build an understanding of things such as our surroundings.<br><br>- Constructing knowledge is an active endeavor on the part of the learner. Actively thinking allows people to understand a new idea. Constructing knowledge requires reflective thought. <br><br>- Constructing an idea is different for every learner regardless of the environment. Learning is built within oneself, but a classroom environment adds to this knowledge. Yackel and Cobb argue that the learner and the culture of the classroom are related reflexively, so they influence one another.</div>]]></description>
