This can affect them negatively and may cause them to develop depression and anxiety problems, derailing the path of finding their true self. An article by psychologist Douglas LaBier entitled, "A Sense of Awe and Life Purpose Increases Your Mental Health," connects the concepts of personal truth and identity with depression. LaBier writes, "This research, published in the Journal of Social Service Research, found that people who create a sense of purpose and meaning in their lives, and seek to find and experience their 'true self,' experience fewer symptoms of depression and anxiety." According to the studies LaBier cites, it is necessary for us to have at least some idea of who we are and who we want to be. If we can't find our purpose, we have a much higher chance of developing mental illnesses.
