After the conquest of Istanbul by the Ottomans in 1453, it was converted into a mosque by Mehmed II. It was taken under renovation by a decree issued by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk in 1934, and in 1935, with the decision of the Council of Ministers, it was converted into a museum, excavation and renovation work was started and it served as a museum from 1935 to 2020. It was converted back into a mosque in 2020. The upper floor of the mosque began to serve as a paid museum in 2024. Thus, the lower floor of Hagia Sophia became a mosque and the upper floor became a museum.

In the last periods of his painting life, he painted Anatolian saints and mothers of abundance. There are many books prepared and compiled about the artist. İbrahim Balaban's statement, "I paint people not with centimetric measurements, but with dialectical methods" and his evaluation of art as a "projection of life" are the reasons why I started to make semantic inquiries on his visual creations.

In 1454, Fatih Sultan Mehmet called all Orthodox people of Istanbul back to the city. Fatih made this call official with a decree and declared that the Orthodox people would be able to receive education in their own language, revive their patriarchate and perform all their religious duties freely as before. Thereupon, the former Byzantines who had left Istanbul returned to the city in groups.The Patriarchate was placed in the Monastery of the Twelve Apostles, where the Fatih Mosque was located at the time. The Patriarchate, which was later transferred to the Fethiye Church, was finally moved to its current location in Fener. In accordance with the agreement between Patriarch Gennadios and Fatih Sultan, a school was established within the borders of Fener in 1454. The Ottomans provided extensive opportunities for this educational institution, which was known as the "Patriarchate Academy" or "Greek Mekteb-i Kebiri" over the centuries. The current building of the school was built by architect Dimadis, one of the most important architects of the nineteenth century and a graduate of the Fener Greek Boys' High School. Most of the building materials for the building, which is the largest building on both sides of the Golden Horn after Süleymaniye, were brought from Marseille. Dimadis, who also built castles in various European countries, especially in Italy and Spain, completed the work in five years. Built on a high hill on the Fener ridge, the structure draws attention with its wide and high facade, red fire bricks and a thick domed tower in the middle. Due to its size, it is often mistaken for the Fener Greek Patriarchate, which is much smaller in structure.
