The spotted hawk swoops by and accuses me, he complains of my gab and my loitering.

I too am not a bit tamed, I too am untranslatable,
I sound my barbaric yawp over the roofs of the world.

The last scud of day holds back for me,
It flings my likeness after the rest and true as any on the shadow’d wilds,
It coaxes me to the vapor and the dusk.

I depart as air, I shake my white locks at the runaway sun,
I effuse my flesh in eddies, and drift it in lacy jags.

I bequeath myself to the dirt to grow from the grass I love,
If you want me again look for me under your boot-soles.

You will hardly know who I am or what I mean,
But I shall be good health to you nevertheless,
And filter and fibre your blood.

Failing to fetch me at first keep encouraged,
Missing me one place search another,
I stop somewhere waiting for you.

Q6. What is the theme (the central idea) of this poem? Can you state it in a single sentence? Elaborate on your idea. - Benny

The theme of the poem is about living a person's life. And how in their life they will not allow other things to affect it and continue to live it how they want to. "I bequeath myself to the dirt to grow from the grass I love," The quote means that the writer is letting his life to what he comes from as in the grass.

Q1. What is the poem’s tone? Which words reveal this tone? Is the poem ironic?. - Ivan

The tone of the poem has a sort of tense feeling to it. We don't know why the hawk decided to start talking to the speaker. But we can infer that the speaker may be going through something mentally which causes him to believe that the hawk is talking to him. For example, the author writes “You will hardly know who I am or what I mean,
But I shall be good health to you nevertheless,” it gives a feeling of not knowing what is going to happen to the speaker.

Q 4. What figures of speech are used? How do they contribute to the tone and meaning of the poem?. - Ivan

One of the figure of speeches that the author used is the use of personification in the bird. Birds don't talk, but the author portrays it as something that can be talked to. The author also used a simile where he wrote "I depart myself as air"

Q5. Are there any symbols? What do they mean? Are they universal symbols or do they arise from the context of this poem? - Benny

The symbol in this story was the hawk. The hawk represents the death that would disrupt the life of the speaker. However the speaker is not letting it affect him. "The spotted hawk swoops by and accuses me, he complains of my gab and my loitering.' The hawk is trying to disrupt whatever the speaker is doing but the speaker doesn't allow for it to go to him.
