Never having the luxury or opportunity to explore different countries it wouldn't be in my best interest to downgrade or speak negative about other nations. As we read about learning more about America's history and the evolution since from the beginning it helps to understand that this country was founded on Power, and evolution. Which helps me to understand why other countries are envious and jealous of The USA. Also respecting the power in which our nation holds from how we have won wars, accompanied allies during the time of need and even stepping in to mediate certain issues on numerous occasions that had nothing to do with us. Over time The US has become extremely dominate through Trial an error but like most countries you can't fault us for our short comings "No Nation is Perfect" But the Morals and Constitution this country was founded on have been a long standing foundation that birthed this great Nation. America is the only nation where every immigrant and minority make plans to visit in their lifetime in search of pursuing the "American Dream". The fact that America is one of the few countries if any that a person or immigrant from another country can actually become a citizen. The world definitely has a different view of the United States from the outside looking in, so of course they have every right speak negative about the US when in all actuality that really knew nothing about it. They have to see actually see it to believe it. Even though our country have been through some tough times those Eras where not everlasting. We have been through Slavery, The Great Depression, World Wars, and from my understanding situations such as those have made this country what it is today. A distinction has always been made between policy and state, state and society. Third World insurgents against British and French rule usually arose from among those who had most absorbed and accepted their ideas and cultures. The terrible French brutality in Indochina and Algeria is barely a memory in those countries, while Paris's continuing interventions in Africa to install new regimes and prop up dictators are not held to discredit it as a flawed state or society. Even Germany is forgiven for plunging the world into two wars and engaging in genocide. Meanwhile, though, the United States continues to be chastised for far more distant historic actions - its treatment of Native Americans, slavery, and ancient interventions in Latin America - which supposedly reveal its true imperialist and brutal essence. Why does America hold this distinction?

America would remain backward because its environment was so hostile it made civilization there virtually impossible. Ignorant of such impressive American animals such as the buffalo and grizzly bear, Buffon claimed that the biggest American animals were "four, six, eight, and ten times" smaller than those of Europe or Africa. He described the people as "feeble and small in his organs of generation; he has neither body hair nor beard nor ardor for his female; although swifter than the European because he is better accustomed to running, he is, on the other hand, less strong in body; he is also less sensitive, and yet more timid and more cowardly; he has no vivacity, no activity of mind. Their heart is frozen, their society cold, their empire cruel." 

This pessimistic belief was widely accepted throughout Europe. These prejudices drove Americans crazy - including Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson. At a banquet at his home in February 1778, Franklin asked all the guests to stand against a wall in order to see who had really "degenerated." All of the eighteen Americans were taller than the eighteen Europeans there. 

After the Revolution, Jefferson took Franklin's old job as the American ambassador to France, where he took on the incredible effort of combating anti-American ideas. In 1787, he had the remains of a New Hampshire moose shipped to France and had it displayed in the lobby of the hotel where he lived to show that American animals were big. 

In response to the claims that Americans were less in both body and mind, one only has to recognize the distinguished Americans living at the time. George Washington and his military achievements, Franklin was a genius in physics, and David Rittenhouse was an astronomer and an artist.

I think America holds the distinction of the American dream is because we have gone thorough major events like the great depression and slavery but we have overcome it. Getting though wars and hard times have made America what it is today. America will continue to grow and change as the years go on.

I had once believed that is was as simple as America butting in where it didn't belong with regards to foreign affairs. I think this is just one of many reasons. America is a relatively new country, with a new form of government. With centuries of rising and falling of governments around the world, we could easily be looked at as inferior to long standing civilizations. Rising to power and spreading our influence in such a short amount of time. I think this is a slap in the face of the rest of the world, and quite possibly the main reason for deep seeded anti-Americanism. I also think chastising America for the seizing of land and use of slaves is hypocritical, given most countries have done the same thing at some point in their history. My brother was actually born in Germany and had dual citizenship. When he turned 18, he had to choose which he wanted to keep. In the event he chose to keep his German citizenship meant that he HAD to serve two years in their military. The day he turned 18 he made his choice, and he choose to keep his American citizenship. He said if he was going to serve then he wanted it to be because he wanted too and not because he had too. He ended up serving in our military and served two tours in Afghanistan. I think that the reason we keep this distinction is because others are jealous. Yes, we were a young country at one point, and we made may mistakes, but just like a child you learn from your mistakes and you grow from those. No nation is perfect, we all have seen failures, but those failures are how you know what needs to be fixed. On of my favorite quotes is from Will Smith, “fail early, fail often, fail forward” we had many failures as a new nation, but we used those to become the nation we are today, we learned through trial and error. Who we are today is why many wish to live here and live the “American Dream”. A place where they are free. Free to live how they want, worship who they want and raise a family. We are sought as an ally because we go to bat for our allies and we don’t take any bullying. We are always learning, and we are always evolving. Those who still distinguishing us are only seeing us from the outside, they can’t see what goes in inside our borders.

Britain had arguably the most impressive military at the time of and before the revolutionary war. To see the most powerful country at the time be defeated by one of their own colonies was a massive blow to their empire, and I can't really blame them for being salty. That would be like having a kid and then ten years down the line your own kid busts you for being the leader of an underground crime ring. I can't speak from personal experience but I would assume that would suck quite a bit. After the war Britain had some disdain for the US and even put sanctions on the country which was a large factor for the start of the War of 1812. I think a lot of resentment towards the US from other European countries also came from the separation from Britain as most other European nations stayed away from the US besides merchant ships and diplomats. A one way trip could take more than six weeks to reach the Americas so most people wouldn't make the journey let alone multiple trips to tell friends and family about their visit, so most people got their information from the British who weren't on good terms with the States. As the years went on the US found itself involved in other countries dealing with governments, some of which who didn't want help, which gave the US a reputation of being nosy and getting in everybody's business. I think that having these freedoms allow each person to believe whatever they want and with the addition of social media spew hate for others to grasp onto and spread themselves. In addition I think that different groups cling onto certain issues because of the personal gain they get from bringing it up as well. Its essentially using others flaws or historical issues to propel their cause. Not saying that is wrong, but it is something that happens here because of our freedoms that other places do not have the "luxury" to experience.

I have not been to many countries, but I did spend a significant amount of time in Central America during the Trump election. His name was the buzzword on the street and shortly after he was elected, I began to receive the occasional racist backlash for being an American. What surprised me the most was the fact that while the country where I resided was in political turmoil itself having just undergone a mass cleanse of its political system that was still teetering on the brink of collapse, the citizens were more caught up in the goings on of the US than in that of their own nation! The reason that this might be is that we as a country have decided to make ourselves big. We have relations with many important countries, we have bases in the Middle East, we push our media and arts into the rest of the world as well. This is the reason that I think we receive so much criticism from everyone else. When someone makes themselves present on the world stage, they tend to get criticized for every little thing they do. It's the same idea as what happens in the personal lives of celebrities. I think the reason why people are more inclined to be negative is the image that America "spits" at other countries. We offer the ideology of the American dream, where if you can work hard enough for long enough it will benefit you in becoming financially stable and achieving the American dream. We see in movies and some thoughts from immigrants in other countries that they see America as a source of freedom, a way to essentially make a name for yourself in another country. I think countries also highlight the negatives of America as well, so they spread negative propaganda about the US which is something that is causing the negative connotation between other countries and the US. By this I mean we do not live with the guilt of what others did before our time or tragedies we had no responsibility in. Rather than constantly apologizing past tragedies, we moved forward to right those wrongs. There is where I think the distinction is drawn. The long mistreatment of ethnic and religious minorities is self-evident, however critiques almost always forgot how America has evolved since then, how we as Americans overcame those obstacle to get to where we are now. We see it as our duty to protect the freedom of everyone in the world because we know how it feels to want freedom. This causes America to be right in the middle of the world's spotlight all of the time. This attention forces an opinion of America to be formed inside of other country's minds. In some countries our interference into other affairs is valued as courageous, while in others it inspires anti-Americanism.  This is also because of the large amount of military power that we have and use often. Our nation has worked from the beginning to become a strong and dominant force in our world. Leaders, businesses, and common people have helped it become what we call America today. I think it is a common thing in the world to want to become the best in whatever you are doing. There always some tension and maybe hate for people that do better than you, but this never really goes away until you are the best and have defeated the best. The desire for countries to want to be better and a more dominant force than America do not like us. It also may be due to past actions we have taken in war and trade, which has caused a bad reputation. When you are in these elevated positions, everything little thing that goes wrong or maybe mistake country has made is held against us. Just like what happens in modern celebrity or athlete world. Anything they do wrong, you are going to hear about it, and some people will forever hold it against them. Since America is put on this elevated pedestal, they are going to take criticism because everyone wants to find some flaw or problem to take them down. The first paragraph starts out like this, "One of the generalities most often noted about Americans is that we are restless, a dissatisfied, searching people. We bridle and buckle under failure, and we go mad in the face of success. We spend our time searching for security, and hate it when we get it. For the most part we are an intemperate people: we eat too much when we can, drink too much, indulge our senses too much. Even in our so-called virtues we are intemperate: a teetotaler is not content not to drink – he must stop all the drinking in the world; a vegetarian among us would outlaw the eating of meat. We work too hard, and many die under the strain; and then to make up for that we play with a violence that is almost suicidal" (Steinbeck, 1966). Of course, there are other reason why anti-Americanism exists such as not righting our wrongs. Yes, Germany committed genocide, but so did America and did nothing to make it right. Sure, we offer money to Native Americans, but we also segregate them to portions of land that we have no use for and they can't even own it. Also, African-Americans are still oppressed and the country ignores it; even denies it.

However, I do think that is depends on each person point of view for America. Everyone has their own America Dream and most of them wants to achicved and that is includes myself. I came to America when I was eight years old with my family as refugee. My family lived a hard life in the Thailand refugee camp and they decided to come here for better life and better future. I have a big dream that I wanted to accomplish which is the American Dream because this country is freedom of the land. This is the reason why it's hard for me when it comes to Anti-Americanism.

When people find out that unfortunately it's not white fence, two kids, white collar jobs their idea of how one should live is then confused and uncertain. I believe another problem that causes so many of us want to be heard, that we will go to any ends to do so, and within those actions, it causes conflict with the law and then people begin to hate on legal forces because they may or may not be extreme on shutting things down. This then causes media to twist things around making whomever look bad, but we aren't getting to full story of the situations. It seems like stories that aren't as much of a high matter are getting recognized rather than the stories that should be heard, like sex trafficking, assaults, homeless people other things like that and that causes problems as well. I believe we are just a place of many people who want to be heard but not sure on how to do so in a correct manner, or may not be getting the results they had hoped for so then it causes a conflict which then leads a domino affect of problems. We are a uniquely young nation meaning that every stupid, terrible or unpopular thing we've done has happens relatively recently. Most countries have centuries worth of history to sift through and that also leads to a deeply ingrained identity among it's people. The United States also has a diverse group of citizens from all backgrounds and countries. This means there are a number of differences in what being an American means. Overall, I think that most hatred of the US comes from over exposure to our culture and politics. Over time we have become one of the most recognizable and dominating cultures in the world, and with the eyes of the world on us, it's hard to be flattering 100% of the time. I think there are times were the US looks like a drunk frat boy flaunting his various cool items and his crazy wealth. Especially when other countries hate you for it. We were quite lucky that our parent country didn't take us over again during our budding times. Instead, it seems that they decided it would be better for them to spread Anti-American propaganda. We were one of the first democracies, so it would be particularly easy for them to spread this. To quote the given source, "From around 1800s to about 1880, the idea that the United States was already demonstrably a failed society, ruined by democracy, equality, and other dangerous experiments was rampant" (Hating America, 2004 by Barry & Judith Rubin). Now, obviously, we didn't fail and can all see that, but itis also really easy to see how this belief came to be. Most likely, people still hold negative beliefs against us, is that people generally do not like those in power. Those in power always seem to be ridiculed for having it. You can’t please everyone. I am bad at remembering history but I am sure that everyone else will remember all the bad things America has done over the good things we have accomplished. We have made mistakes but we have learned from them. Everybody makes mistakes but everybody has room for growth, just like America and other countries. Also, same with how you can see this happen on a smaller level with bullies, I feel all the focus on what America has done in the past makes other countries feel like it makes them look better. Other countries are “forgiven” for their past choices? Who “forgave” them? It is easier to forgive than forget. America is like the younger sibling. They are going to be picked on and chastised for everything they do.

People look at the United States in many different ways, some people dream to move here because they think it is the best country and others would never dare to. In all, people have a tendency to automatically look at the bad in anything so I think that is mainly what it is, they look at the bad and chastise anything they can to make us look like a worse country. Yes we have had our fair share of bad history/decisions, but we are also a powerful country, which I believe scares people sometimes, especially countries that are our “enemies”. It is also hard for people to look at facts and also to look at the now; everybody has some kind of biases and a lot of people tend to focus solely on the past. A lot of it too is that we are a huge country (size and population wise) with a powerful government so we are always in big events like wars. Most countries that you rarely ever hear anything bad about tend to be smaller countries that are rarely involved in stuff like that. We are just often in center view, so it is more likely to be talked about.

You do always hear people say "The American Dream" and for a lot of us now it seems like that may be an odd statement because we are pretty darn privileged in general but  a lot of no american and even american people in the beginning wanted a better way of life and saw what those in America were doing to be successful and a powerful force in labor, military, and overall living conditions. I do believe the United States presents a ton of opportunities so that is why people from other countries see it as a place where magic happens and there is no suffering or pain, etc. However, there are also people that hate America and do agree with our involvement in certain issues and wars and don't like things we've done in the past. I feel bad and good will always be a part of that and we can't stop others or ourselves for being aware of both. All in all, I believe America has a lot to be proud of and our nation is always going to be picked apart because we are a super power and others are always always looking at us ready to pick at every little thing. We did a lot of fighting and negotiating, etc to get where we are today. Though i would argue that we are overall the greatest country in the world (mainly in terms of liberty, freedom of choice, quality of life, etc.) it can be argued that we do still get beat in a handful of things by other countries, in education for example. These short-comings however don't make America "bad." I recently had the opportunity to spend 2 years living in Brazil and was often asked what Americans thought of Brazil. My answer was always that Americans usually only think of the Amazon, Rio de Janeiro, and beaches (because that is all we see in tv and movies). When i would ask what they thought of Americans they would often list that we have school shootings, war, we are all super rich, no poor people, etc. This for the same reason, it's all they see in movies and tv. I believe as human beings we have a terrible ability to call more attention to the bad things and injustices that happen in our lives and the world, letting the bad overshadow all the good. America has a rocky history like any other. The biggest example is obviously slavery. Turns out the United states abolished slavery in 1865, Brazil didn't abolish slavery until 1888 (the last country in the western world to do so) but they don't talk about it down there today because its in the past, its over. In certain parts of the middle east the White slave trade still continues to this day. Mine as a citizen of the United states is that we live in the greatest country on earth and are awarded many freedoms, but that does not mean the country is without faults or mistakes. The United States is such a strong country and major power in the world, others around the globe are going to keep a close eye and have an opinion on everything the US does. I think that the people of other countries may feel resentment that we have certain freedoms, so they make our mistakes as a country a bigger deal than others or even their own. I also think that the US has grown so much in a relatively quick time compared to other countries, so the US has had lots of success in a short period of time as well as made its fair share of mistakes and done some horrible things. I think that the short time period that these things happened may be what comes to mind for other countries and it paints the wrong picture, leaving out the good.

So many other countries, especially Britain, have had just or more bloody pasts than America. I think there can be a few reasons as to why our country is still feeling the rage from others. One reason I think is because America never really acknowledges its past actions. Our treatment of Native Americans is especially disregarded in schools, often only being learned from outside sources. I think if America stepped up and took responsibility and denounced the actions of our past people wouldn't hold such a disdain. Another reason I think for this anti-Americanism feelings is that it's more of a way to pinpoint issues with America. It's easy to hate America in general but especially so when you can say exactly America did wrong.
