Baseballs are a tool to help you in baseball. Without a ball, you can't play baseball. Baseballs need to be sturdy because it gets pitched and hit many times in a game. Baseballs are made so that they are hard to break. Have you ever wondered why there are red laces on a baseball? Well, the laces help the pitcher know where to grip the ball to throw certain pitches. This video shows how baseballs are made.

Pitchers in baseball kind of have a hidden advantage. They have lots of pitches to choose from. A lot of pitches are breaking balls (aka curve balls). Breaking balls are pitches that move in the air. Pitchers like these pitches because they trick batters because they move through the air. Batters have to have very good eye coordination to hit curve balls. This video shows you how you can throw a curve ball.

In 1919 a Cardinal pitcher by the name of "Spittin' Bill Doak went to the Rawlings Sporting Goods company and he wanted to make a newly designed baseball glove. He wanted it to included an adjustable laced web with a deep pocket that didn't need to be broken in. In 1920, Doak hired a chief glove designer named Harry Latina. Gloves soon became a very important tool of the game. So this is why Doak is a very helpful person in baseball today.

How the Baseball has Changed Over time

It's not just the baseball glove that has changed over time. The actual ball has changed too. In 1910, a cork center was substituted for rubber. In the 1930s, raised stitching and a thicker cover were introduced. The changes to the ball have been minor but they have impacted the amount of home runs hit in a season and the players' batting averages. The National League and American League haven't always agreed on the changes which has caused them to use different balls sometimes. Changes are still being made today. In 2021, the tension in the ball was loosened. Hopefully as new technology is available, baseball will continue to improve the equipment used in the games.
