Sara Fortis was born in 1927 in the city of Catkins. Before the war Sara lived with her mother and sister as her father passed away early in her life. Even though she was fully Greek she was still Jewish and still participated in Friday night lighting of candles and church holidays. Sara had a mostly happy childhood and it only went down hill when the war picked up right after her 14 birthday.

When Sara knew she had to leave her hometown her mother and her left for a place called Kurturla. Once they could not hide any longer Sara left her mom to go join a Resistance group at age 15. Before she left the villagers made sure that her mom was safe from the Germans then she was off. When she left she went to many different villages to find other woman to join the group with her until she had enough people in her group. once her group was complete they joined a group of partisans.

Sara Fortis was very well respected as she taught the partisans many tips and tricks to fighting. Many people were grateful for her actions and called her "Captain Sarika". though many appreciated her the men got most of the credit even though the woman did the same as the men. Even though she got credit many did not recognize her until she was about 18.
