Characteristics of Grit

There are 4 major components of the characteristic "grit."

Interest:

Having genuine interest in the subject matter you are dealing with to achieve your goal is vital to the survival of your motivation to complete the task. Curiosity in the things you do keep you attentive and constantly craving more knowledge or progress into the goal. Without interest, you will not have enough drive or care and concern for the task at hand to complete it.

Practice:

Deliberate practice means you take the time to identify areas of weakness in your skillset or project and seek for ways to improve. Once you find ways to improve you constantly implement and adjust if necessary. You have a desire to exceed your current level of skill and strive to be the best you can be!

Purpose:

Purpose means that your project or task has an affect on other people that you care about. If you feel you are being of service to others, you are more likely to maintain your level of passion throughout the project. Having a sense of purpose in everything will also help keep you positive and motivated to continue.

Hope:

Hope is believing that despite setbacks, you will succeed. If things don't immediately go as planned, you refuse to give up and continue forward. Hope is important because once it's lost, you will not find a reason to continue.

Growth Mindset VS. Fixed Mindset

Growth Mindset:

Having a growth mindset means you believe there is room to develop and advance your current level of skill. You recognize that with some grit you can achieve new lengths and get better with effort. You are not deterred by failures and use them as opportunities to learn and improve.

Fixed Mindset:

Having a fixed mindset means you believe that a person is born with a certain set of skills and talents and cannot improve or develop new ones. You are easily convinced that the world is out to get you and refuse to take responsibility when you misunderstand or misinterpret directions and get bad results. You act as though just because you put in a lot of effort into something that you should get an excellent score or result even if your work wasn't exactly what was being looked for.

Anthony Kiedis had alot of grit to overcome heroin addiction.

Lead singer of the Red Hot Chili peppers, Anthony Kiedis, spent many years addicted to heroin and other drugs. He has since been sober since 2000, and given his many attempts at sobriety, and the depth how how aggressively his addiction had gripped him, I cannot think of another person who has shown more grit then him.

Whenever someone is trying to get sober, they say to go after your sobriety with the same level of action that you used to get high. If that isn't the grittiest level of effort, I don't know what is! Here is an article discussing one of his initial expiriences in treatment at the bottom, and I'd say it was quite powerful.

"And the counsellor said, I'm looking at 30 of you, and stats-wise, one of you is gonna get sober outta here. And I was like, Get out the way, cos I'm getting that spot. I was such an egomaniac, like, I'm taking that, please, the rest of you can go back to where you came from."

I'd say Kiedis certainly had a growth mindset when taking on the massive challenge of getting and maintaining sobriety. In his book, "Scar Tissue" he discusses that getting sober for him happened through the help of Narcotics Anonymous. Despite his many relapses back into active addiction, he continued to make efforts towards his goal of living life sober. That is one of the strategies used when having a growth mindset, in fact, I'd say this could embody two of them. Don't fear failure and cultivating perseverance. It could've been easy to slip back into old ways and completely let his addiction take him over again as he had before, but he knew sobriety was something that was important to him, vital for his survival in fact.

Another strategy I believe he employed was in seeking constructive feedback. When you consider yourself a part of NA, you are making yourself malleable and open to suggestion. Clearly the way you have been thinking your whole life has not done you any favors, look where it has led you! He had to be open enough to not only hear people out when they gave him suggestions to remain sober, he had to have the desire to implement them. I admire him for his grit and determination to really live his life and to be able to stop one of the most difficult addictions human kind faces.

https://www.loudersound.com/news/red-hot-chili-peppers-anthony-kiedis-i-felt-whole-putting-cocaine-and-heroin-in-me-until-i-had-to-pay-the-toll

Grit and Growth Mindset and my Education

Becoming a gritty student and maintaining a growth mindset during my time as a student can help me immensely to complete my program and hopefully learn and retain more information. By having all 4 elements of grit I can maintain the level of motivation I will need throughout my few years in school, and if needed, the grit I need to even take things just a day at a time.

A growth mindset as a student can be immensely helpful by keeping me from getting discouraged when my grades aren't looking super hot. I think by keeping positive, having a level of hope will be much easier to maintain, therefore keeping my drive high to continue to do my best on every assignment despite how others may have ended up.

Perfect example I'm currently dealing with would be the 2 weeks of school I missed due to a miscommunication when I went in for mental health treatment. Due to no fault of anyone involved, the school originally thought I'd be able to take 30 days off with no issue. After I had already been admitted, come to find out I actually couldn't take the time off. Instead of feeling completely screwed and giving up, I am so grateful I communicated with everyone and they gave me the opportunity to make up the missed work. Although my grade for this class isn't super hot right now, I cannot let it stand in the way of my larger goal. I've wanted to be some kind of artist ever since I was a kid and I'm finally trying to accomplish that. I have to keep my head up and try to make good on everything going on.
