In 1839 under the initiative of queen Amalia a garden was designed next to the modern Parliament and the palace of king Othon’s of the time, that was named ‘’National Garden’’. There is a great variety of endemic and tropical trees and plants. The palm trees of the garden are characteristic, and Amalia seems to have said ‘’Maybe I won’t see the palms growing, but the Athenians will see them in 300 years.’’

The National Garden is the greenest place in the city and covers an area of 158 acres. It is situated among the Avenues of Amalia, Queen Sophia, Herodes Atticus and King Konstadine. The flora consists of 7.000 trees and 40.000 bushes. There are, also, ducks, tortoises and lots of birds. The garden is Athenians’ favourite walking place, especially in the summer, when the shadow of the trees offer visitors a shelter from the high temperatures.

It was constructed in 1897 by the architect E. Tsiller and it was the Summer Palace. After the fire in 1909 in the ‘’Old Palace’’, the modern Greek Parliament, the royal family stayed temporarily in the building known as the ‘’Modern Palace’’. In 1924, when the time of the king was over, it became the Presidential Mansion and since 1974 it is the formal residence of the President of the Greek Democracy.

It is guarded by the Presidential Guard. These are the ‘’Evzones’’, that wear a red hat, called ‘’Pharion’’, that symbolises the ancestors’ blood for the freedom of the country, the ‘’Fustanella’’, which has a fabric of 30 m. with 400 pleats, which represent the period of the turkish occupation, while the ‘’Tsarouchia’’ have got black tussels, to symbolise the bitterness and death of the ancestors. Their clothes are hand made and their training is very strict.

Ιt is one of the most impressive stadiums in the world. It is situated behind King Konstadine Avenue and opposite the Zappeion Gardens. It was made of white pentelikon marble.

The ancient stadium, where the Great Panathenaea were taking place every four years, was constructed in 330 B.C and at first it had wooden seats for the noblemen, whereas the rest of the spectators sat on the inclined ground. In 144 B.C Herodes Atticus constructed a new marble stadium in the shape of a petal. As the years were passing by the stadium fell out of use.

In 1894, when Athens undertook the rebirth of the Olympic Games, the reconstruction of the stadium was decided with the donations of the national benefactor George Averoff. The works went on and were completed after the end of the Games, in 1906. The stadium has a capacity of 60.000 seats, it hosts public celebrations and it is the finish of the men’s and women’s Classical Marathon of Athens.

Fifteen huge Corinthian columns are the ruins of the temple of Olympian Zeus. In 515 BC the tyrant of Athens Peisistratus began the construction of a doric temple with limestone dedicated to Olympian Zeus, on the west bank of the Ilissos river. In the same place, according to tradition, Deucalion had built a temple after the flood, to thank Zeus that the waters that had flooded the area withdrew to the bed of Ilissos. When the tyranny was overthrown, the temple was left semi-finished. During the Hellenistic period, a Corinthian temple was built, but again it was not completed. Hadrian rebuilt the temple in the period 125-130 AD, this time completing it. A colossal statue of Zeus and a statue of the Roman emperor were situated at Olympion. In Byzantine times a basilica church was built within the courtyard of the archaeological site.
