That is because in the time of 1609-1610 was known to be called the starving time, because food was scarce and that they were doing everything they could to not eat each other. They ate horses, cats, rats, even shoe leather, even one man was executed for killing his wife to heat her. Although there are many times that crime happened, a recent discovery of a 14 year old girl's bones was found. Great Britain did send a lot of people, but most of the people they sent were rich people. With only rich people at Jamestown, that ment that there were not a lot of workers there meaning work would not be done, meaning that it was hard to have a house built, or food on the table for everyone. The problem with this is that they could not tell Great Britain to stop sending people because they didn't have people to make a ship to tell them to stop sending people, making it a death trap.

People were getting hungry but there was not enough food to feed everyone. They called this time the “Starving Time”. There would be no food left for the colonists to eat during the winter so, some colonists set off to trade with the natives for food. Instead the colonists found that the natives were not eager to trade what little food was available, and instead, tried convincing the natives to trade food through the use of force. According to Jamestown Research Documents, it states that, “Some harsh and cruel dealing by cutting off two of the Salvage's heads and other extremities” (Doc D). This paints the picture of colonists who were desperate for survival. This evidence shows that no matter if the Indians went hungry the colonists would kill them if they did not give them the food the colonists needed. According to Jamestown Research Documents, “110 men arrived in May 1607 and 47 of the men were gentlemen” (Doc C).This evidence shows that most of the men had no clue of what they were doing. The gentlemen have never touched a tool in their lives and now they are forced to learn how to use their hands, by themselves because none have worked a day in their lives.

According to the Library of Congress, Jamestown had  water, but it was salty. Jamestown’s water was so salty that if the citizens drank it they would dehydrate and die. Without water, people can only live 3 days. Not only would the salty water kill the people of Jamestown but also the bad water made them unable to grow crops.

The people not having much food is the second reason why Jamestown wiped out. Since the people in Jamestown couldn’t grow crops, they started eating dogs, horses, and their friends. ｔthe site that I forgot,but it's somewhere in wikapidia  explains that when Jamestown was doing well the people of Jamestown usually caught a dolphin, fish,or animal, but since they ate too much, they eventually ran out of food. There were squirrels, which they could catch and eat, but it was not enough food for all the people that lived in Jamestown. The first reason that so many settlers died in JameTown’s was from Conflict with Native Americans. Francis West and 36 men sailed through Chesapeake Bay to try to trade for corn with the Patawomeke Indians. Document D describes how trading did not go well and ended in death for some Native Americans. According to Documents D, it  shows how they treated them. One sentence from Document D states... “some harshe and [cruel] dealing by cutting two of the Savages heads and other extremetyes,” This evidence shows how the settler treated the Native Americans. With the settlers treating the Natives like this, at some point they would strike back.

This evidence shows that this will cause a lot of problems for the settlers along the road such as lack of experience, Bad judgment, not enough resources to survive, lack of teamwork and all these together cause a lot of conflict. This can cause conflict because these settlers are like wild animals fighting for survival and they will do anything to live. It even got to the point where some would cut off limbs and heads of Natives when they would not trade. Yes you heard that right, these settlers went to extreme measures to survive.

This forced the  settlers had to resort to extreme measures. In Document D, a Crew went looking to “trade” for food with the Indians, and when the Indians said no to their request, the settlers resorted to extreme methods.
