1. The title page for chapter one foreshadows looks like somebody is leaving and is getting begged to stay.
2. The irony of the conversation between Artie and his father is that Artie says "It makes everything more real-more human" even though they are mice, the other irony is that Vladek doesn't want his private life to be published and we are currently reading about it.

One important event is that Artie returns home to his father and starts to write a comic book about his fathers experience of the Holocaust. Another important event is that Vladek was in Czestochowa and was up and coming in the textile industry. Third important event is Vladek meets a lady called Anja who is Arties mother. Fourth important event is Lucia doesn't breaks up with Vladek when she learns about Anja. The fifth important event is that Vladek and Anja get married on February 14, 1937.

1. The image on the title page for chapter two shows the Nazi flag being shown, this can foreshadow the Nazis are on the rise of power. 2. The German people are cats and the Polish people are the pigs. Characteristics with cats is that they are natural hunters which can be a characteristic for the Germans. The characteristic of pigs is that they are smart but not very good at anything else. Spiegelman did good on making the Germans cats but I don't very much understand making the Polish pigs.

One important event is that one of Anja's old ex-boyfriend is involved in Communist activities. Second important event is that Vladek gets his own textile factory with help of Anja's father. The third event is Anja and Vladek have their first kid, Richieu. The fourth event is that when Anja and Vladek head to Czestochowa, they notice a Nazi banner flying in the center of a small town. Fifth event is that Vladek is enlisted into the Polish army because war is close.

The description of Vladek is that he is looking old, takes medicine, and he works out. Evidence of Vladek looking old is Artie saying this when he met his father after a while, "He had aged a lot since I saw him last. My mother's suicide and his two heart attacks had taken their toll."(Spiegelman.1.11) Another description of Vladek is that he has to take pills and medicine. Evidence of this is "I'm making into daily portions my pills". (Spiegelman.2.26) Evidence of Vladek exercising is "Come-we'll talk while I pedal."(Spiegelman1.12) The thing that happens in Chapter 2 that changes are perspective of him he still thinks that he still has a habit of doing things like he did in the Holocaust. For example, Vladek rations his pills out when Artie first finds him in chapter two.

1. The image for Chapter 3 foreshadows that Vladek will be a prisoner of war against the Germans.
2. Spiegelman shows the Germans attitude with killing Jews by having the Germans have a casual attitude by drinking and chatting during the executions.
3. The incident with the coat involving Arty and the father is that the father is still worried about stuff in the Holocaust and prefers functionality over fashion.

One important event is that Vladek is enlisted into the Polish army right before the second world war. The second event is that Vladek gets taken prisoner by the Germans. The third event is Vladek is forced into labor camps. The fourth major event is that Vladek is released from the camps and returns to German occupied Poland. The fifth event is that Vladek reunites with Anja and Richieu in Poland.

References to real life can be seen everywhere in MAUS. It can be seen in characters, locations, and real life events. An example of it being seen in characters is the Germans being the cats who are able to prey on the mice who are the Jews. An example of it using locations is that it calls former "Czechoslovakia", "Czestochowa" in MAUS. Real life events are used in MAUS when World War 2 starts in chapter three. The Germans and Polish fight, resulting in Vladek being captured. Spiegelman uses a comic book format for MAUS. Using this format allows for readers to see the animals that are assigned to a certain ethnicity. Spiegelman diction includes using Polish words like "Zlotys" and not using that many complex words.

1. The chapter page to chapter 4 is foreshadowing the Holocaust is taking place.
2. Spiegelman introduces us to his family by “panning” around the dining table because it shows what they are doing at the time and it allows him to give backstory on them.
3. Vladek doesn't tell his family about the money because he thinks they wouldn't save any of it. It reveals to us that he doesn't trust his family with money and keeps it for himself.
4. On page 82, the Germans tell the Poles that they will be able to live in vacated places where the Jews lived.
5. Vladik heard about Auschwitz in the early days of the Holocaust and his reaction was that he didn't believe it.
6. Vladek and his family is having a tough choice deciding whether to sign up at the stadium because, if they do sign up, they might be getting tricked by the Nazis and if they don't sign up, they might be shot down in the streets if founded out.

One event in Chapter 4 is that we are introduced to Vladeks family which is important because it gives more to the story. The second event is that Vladek is earning illegal money on the side, this is important because he saves it for himself. Third event is that the Nazis start placing posters around town to get Jews into the Ghettos, this is important because it was one of the first steps of the Holocaust. Fourth event is that Vladek first hears about Auschwitz, this is important because it was one of the biggest concentration camps. Fifth event is that Vladek and his family is faced with an ultimatum to register at the stadium or refuse, this is important because it could lead to life or death

1.The chapter page for chapter 5 foreshadows either the Jews hiding out or facing the harsh conditions of the ghettos.
2. Vladek gets upset when reading the comic because it reminds him of Anja.
3.The events on pages 119-121 involve people tricking others in the ghetto for own personal gain. The events do not surprise me because some people considered it necessary for their survival. Vladek and his family is betrayed by other Jews when someone tells the Nazis where Vladek and his family are hiding.
4.Spiegelman draws the crossroads as a swastika and means that they will continue running into Nazis.
5.I don't think Vladek comments are right about Mala because at the beginning of the chapter she calls Artie to try and get Vladek to stop trying to fix the leak in the gutter which could of lead to his death. She wouldn't have done that if she wanted him to die for his money.

One important event in chapter 5 is that Vladek is reminded of Anja in a comic and becomes sad, this is important because he still thinks about her. Second event is that Vladek and his family goes into hidind, this is important because the Nazis would round Jews up and send them to camps. Third important event is that a stranger comes across their hiding spot and is spared, this is important because the stranger tells the Nazis where they are. The fourth important event is that Vladek and Anja are only saved from the vans because he has money and not because of family bonds, thats important because is shows that some Jews were only willing to help if it helped them. Fifth important event is that Vladek and Anja escape from the ghetto but not from Nazi rule, this is important because the Nazis occupied most of Europe at the time and were always looking for Jews.

Anti-Semitism is being passed down by generation because of the parents.
4. Artie calls Vladek a "murderer" because he destroyed Anja's diaries. He uses a strong word because all her memories are destroyed. I don't agree with Artie because some of Anja's stories can still be told by other people like Vladek.

One important event in chapter 6 is Mala and Vladek are having fights about money, this is important because it shows that the Holocaust changed Vladek forever. Second important event is that Richieu's governess refuses to allow Vladek and Anja in, this is important because it showed that the Nazis intimidated people and they were afraid that if they hid Jews they would die as well. Third important event is a fellow Jew helps Vladek and Anja get some food, this is important because it showed that not all Jews were selfish during the Holocaust. Fourth important event is that Vladek and Anja get on a train to leave but gets caught by the Nazis, this is important because they can't get out of it now. The fifth important event is that Vladek and Anja are sent to Auschwitz, this is important because it was one of the biggest concentration camps.

1. The title page foreshadows that a mouse (probably Vladek) is in Auschwitz.
2. Artie is wondering if him and Richieu would have gotten along if he was alive.
3. The priest tries to cheer Vladek back up by saying that his numbers are lucky in Jewish tradition.
4. Mandelbaum is described as a mess, almost all of his clothes provided to him weren't his size.
5. One trait Vladek shows is that he can adapt. An example is when the Polish Captain tells Vladek he needs to be assigned to a work group and Vladek says "I can do anything once i'm shown how." (Spiegelman.36.) Another trait Vladek shows is he has become sneaky. This is shown when Vladek sneaks both him and Artie into the resort.
6. “Mauschwitz” stands for the concentration camp, Auschwitz. "The Catskills" stands for the Nazis killings.

One important event is that Mala has finally left Vladek and has taken some of his money with her. Another important event is Vladek and Anka arrive in Mauschwitz but are seperated from each other. Third important event is Vladek is able to stick with his friend Mandelbaum during most of his time at Mauschwitz. Fourth event is that Vladek is protected by the Polish Captain because he is teaching him English. Fifth event is that Vladek is able to sneak him and Artie into a resort.

1. Artie portrays himself as a human wearing a mouse mask. He also later portrays himself as a baby. Artie is also feeling depressed during this section. Him drawing himself as a baby could be related to the fact his Mom committed suicide and she didn't even leave a note for him. The fame he has gotten from MAUS is not what he wanted. People ask him about other situations unrelated to his book.
2. Vladek says that the Germans are losing the war at this point. The Russians are nearing Mauschwitz. The Germans want to round everybody up and send them back to Germany to get gassed.
3. The irony of the last few panels is that the mosquitoes are the Jews and the bug spray is gas.

1. The story about the 3 S.S. getting killed saddens Vladek because he knew the four girls who provided the prisoners with ammunition and they were hung for days near his workshop. I think he thought two things, one is that he thinks the Nazis did another barbaric act by leaving the bodies up hanging for a long time. The other reason is that the retaliation wasn't worth the lives that were lost.
2. Vladek is able to survive in the cattle car by hanging a spare cloth from the ceiling as a kind of hammock.
3. Francoise is disgusted that Vladek calls him insane for stopping for a black man. Francoise can't believe that Vladek of all people is racist because he is a Jew that has been through the Holocaust. Vladek says that they don't have any correlation. Spiegelman includes this because it shows that the Holocaust may not change some people. It also shows how Vladek stereotyped him when he has been stereotyped for most of his life.
4. The event shows that the Holocaust will always remain in his memories because of how traumatic it was.
5. The photo is placed at the end of the book because it's a "souvenir photo" and shows the hard journey Vladek went on.
6. Artie draws a Jewish star on both of their tombstones. He did it because both of his parents are Jewish and they are proud of it.

One important event is that Vladek and the prisoners are forced to march Germany. Second important event is that they are forced into cattle cars, Vladek survives because he makes a hammock. Third important event is that Vladek arrives at Dachau where the conditions are awful, Vladek gets typhus which allows him to go to the hospital ward which is in better condition. Fourth important event is Vladek is sent on a train to Switzerland. Fifth important event is that Vladek is stereotyping black men when they come across one.

MAUS and Spiegelman treat the Holocaust by using animals and not Humans. The events in the book still relates to other works about the Holocaust. One example is how MAUS and The Boy in Striped Pajamas relate. On page 29 of MAUS , we can see Mandelbaum is in clothing that doesn't fit him. In The Boy in Striped Pajamas, we can see through scenes that prisoners are not wearing clothing that are their sizes. The thing that is unique about MAUS is that it uses animals to match the stereotypes. Spiegelman sets his work apart by adding both Vladek in present day and how the Holocaust has affected him, Vladek also tells his experience during the Holocaust.

Dogs are used to represent the Americans because they not only scare off cats but they are seen as trusting and noble animals.
3. The scattering of the pictures show how shattered his family became because of the Holocaust.

One important event is that Anja returns back to her hometown. Second important event is that Vladek was planned to be exchanged for other prisoners but the train gets stopped and they are forced somewhere else. Third important event is that Vladek and his friend manages to hide in a abandoned farm to hide from Germans. Fourth important event is that Vladek is finally liberated by the Americans. Fifth event is that Vladek almost has another heart attack but Artie saves him and puts him to rest.

Have you ever wondered what a mouse in the Holocaust would look like? Then MAUS is the book for you!

The book information is that MAUS is a book written by Art Spiegelman that came out in 1980. The plot summary is that an author called "Artie" starts to write a book based on his fathers experience during the Holocaust. My praise of the book is that it shows another perspective of the Holocaust but takes a interesting spin on it by making the characters animals. By adding animals to the book it makes certain ethnicities be symbolized into what happened in the Holocaust/World War II. My critique of the book is how the story can be confusing sometimes when they jump from modern day to the past. I would recommend this book if someone is interested in the Holocaust. My rating of MAUS is 8/10.
