This shows his deep longing for his dreams to become a reality.
Symbolism- symbolism is also shown when he states "city" this shows how he wishes to be in an ideal society where homosexuality is accepted.
Mood- This is shown in the beginning as he tries to show how he wants everyone to not argue and instead get along.
Rhythm- This is shown in the way that he pauses after the end of his sentences.
Alliteration- is used in the beginning with the statement “I dream’d in a dream.” This is the repetition of consonant sounds, which is the letter “d.” It also shows identical vowel sounds with the vowels “eam” in “dream’d” and “dream.”

Symbolism- Whitman uses the mirror as a symbol for his views of the world.  In the beginning the dirty mirror symbolizes sadness and darkness in the world.  Later on in the poem, the clean mirror symbolizes happiness and opportunity.
Mood- Whitman's mood throughout the poem changes from gloomy and dark to light and optimistic.
Point of View- The point of view is first person.  Whitman is telling his soul about the new appreciation for life he has gained. 
Theme- The theme of this poem is to not worry because the bad times won't last forever, eventually you will see "the tarnish gone".

He wants everyone to get along and not judge one another in the city. He describes his desire for men and how he wants it to be accepted. In the city not everyone respects this ideal, but he is not one to care for that. Whitman talks of the city with a want for everyone's freedom of expression to be accepted. He wants the people to accept others and their ideals whether they agree with them or they do not agree with them. This is shown when he states, "I saw a city invincible to the attacks of the whole of the rest of the earth" (Whitman, I dreamed in a dream). This shows how he dreams of that to one day happen. Transcendentalists admire and respect nature. They also use it as a way to learn about the world and their place in it. Whitman uses clouds to show gloom and sadness. He uses the cloud as a way to express his feelings. He then uses the disappearance of the cloud to show the greatness of life.
