Before space Alan participated in world war 2 and became a naval aviator. He then went on to become a test pilot in the navy. This is why Alan was one of the seven people NASA had chosen. when Alan was picked out of the seven it was because of his thirst for pushing boundaries. Unfortunately Alan was almost not allowed to go on Apollo 14 because of an ear infection he had, thankfully he got that cleared up and was able to go.
