The Ancient Empire was the source of poets and prophets that spread their knowledge throughout their city-states. This contributed to the first writings of epic poems. These were long poems that tell the deeds of a great hero. The first of these poems was written by a poet with the name of Homer.
The Athenian people were the first and largest collection of the people to change their main form of government to democracy instead of the dictatorship that they had before.
To keep the power from one person, they devised a plan called 'checks and balances'.
The contributions go from arts and literature, to new governments based on catering to the people. The Roman Empire was home to many advances scientifically and mathematically as well. These included their use of the water mill, the alarm clock, and as well as the basis of geometry.

Between 1600 and 1100 B.C., one of the first Grecian city-state, Mycenae, was born was flourishing. It's citizens were part of a group of Indo-European people that migrated to places like southern and western Europe, India, and Iran. One of these groups entered Greece from the north around 1900 B.C..
Mycenaean civilization reached it's peak around 1400 and 1200 B.C., since it was ruled by multiple powerful monarchies. Each monarchy resided in a stone palace.

Some historians believe that the Mycenaean people were well-equipped militarily, conquering Crete and making it part of their growing empire. The most famous of their attacks was the taking of the city of Troy. It is mentioned in one of Homer's famous writings.

The Mycenaean kingdom crumbled at around 1100 B.C.. Greece entered a dark time of declining food production and population. Historians call this time, approximately 1100 - 750 B.C., the Dark Age.
Near the end of the Dark Age, the works of Homer appeared, and the first epic poems were constructed.

By 750 B.C., the city-state, or polis, had become the central focus of Greek life.
City-states varied in size, with Athens being overwhelmingly populated compared to most.
By the time of 800 - 600 B.C., both Athens and Sparta had both begun to become more unified as city-states, yet in 594 B.C., Athens was on the verge of civil war. They soon handed all power of the city-state over to Solon to prevent further argument.

Classical Greece is the name for the time period of 500 B.C., to the conquest of Greece in 338 B.C.. With the growth of the Athenian Empire, however, left the Greek world divided into two separate groups. Athens and Sparta. Neither state was able to tolerate how the other one worked, which eventually formed into the Great Peloponnesian War in 431 B.C.. The war lasted until 405 B.C., and the power of Greece was unstably contained for the next 66 years.

Aristotle longed to unite all of Greece under Macedonia. He finally did so in 338 B.C., at the battle of Chaeronea. Before their leader could attempt to conquer Asia, he was assassinated, leaving the task to his son Alexander.
By 331 B.C., Alexander had conquered the Persian Empire, however he was not yet satisfied. He went on to take the control of lands as far as modern-day Pakistan.
