Good Day everyone. I am from the School of Computer Sciences, USM. My area of specialisation is Natural Language Processing (NLP), specifically in Speech Processing. In a nutshell, my research is about assisting the interaction between human and computer so it can be as natural as possible.
Aspiration
We are living in a fast pace life. In general, we need everything quick. This superfast pace culture create a new trend: people pay less attention to details. As Stephen Covey said: “Most people do not listen with the intent to understand; they listen with the intent to reply.” This, in return I think resulting a less thinking trend.
I hope we can harness the (healthy) hunger for knowledge. Not over-curious habit but sensible mental framework that thus, makes learning process more interesting and will inspire more knowledge sharing.
Expectation from P&P Course
I have heard so many motivating and inspiring shares from my friends who have attended the P&P course by Prof Karim and team. However, when I asked the detail of the content, what they shared cannot really get through me and they ended up saying: "you will have to attend the course. Get the experience yourself. It is not only about the tools or the method. It is not only about teaching and learning. It is more than that." So I think, I do expect those mentioned features and more. I know that changes and improvement come within our own self so hopefully I can be the sponge to absorb all the knowledge from the course.

Like a quote by Sarah Caldwell:

“Learn everything you can, anytime you can, from anyone you can. There will always come a time when you will be grateful that you did.”

See you all during P&P!

Assalamualaikum & greetings everyone! I'm Siti Sarah Fazalul Rahiman, from School of Pharmaceutical Sciences. You may call me Sarah. My research interests span immunomodulation of natural product-derived compounds, focusing on the intracellular modulation by macrophages on pain and inflammatory signalling pathways.

Frankly speaking, one of the reasons I chose to join academia rather than working in the hospital is due to the encouragement that I received from my lecturers during my undergrad studies. They shared their aspirations as academicians which indirectly inspired me to be like them one fine day. So when I joined USM recently, I aspire to set good examples for the students and guide them to understand that the purpose of life is to believe, to hope, to persevere and to keep striving until they reach their goals - in line with my all-time favourite quote, "When the going gets tough, the tough gets going".

I believe that the P&P course is an excellent platform for us, the newbies, to exchange our teaching experiences so far. At the end of course, it is hopeful that I can get up-dated with the current teaching tools and improvise my T&L approaches to suit the needs of the ever-challenging Gen-Z in the era of IR 4.0. See you guys soon!

Assalamualaikum wbt & salam sejahtera.

My name is Norizan Binti Kadir from History Section, School of Distance Education.

I am currently teaching History of Traditional Southeast Asia and my specialization is in Malaysian & Southeast Asian History.

My aspiration as an academician in USM is to internalize the wisdom and meaning of education as well as the true knowledge from the Islamic worldview, thus inculcating and instilling it amongst the students. A part of the process of meaning-making in life is to understand the history itself. Soren Kierkegaard once said, “Life can only be understood backwards, but it must be lived forwards”. The true knowledge as Prof Naquib al-Attas propounded, will produce a man with a good “adab”. He explained that “adab as concisely defined is the spectacle of justice as it is reflected by wisdom”. Thus, I will try my best to deliver the knowledge as well as to equip my students with the necessary tools on how to be objective in history. With a clear and comprehensive understanding of history, then only every student will be able to become a good citizen and appreciate their country as well as to preserve the harmonious environment.

In regards of this P&P course, it is definitely my hope and expectation that I would gain a maximum understanding on the 21st-century philosophy, ideas and tools of teaching, learning and education that would enhance my knowledge on education for the benefit of myself and my students.

I am looking forward to learning from the wise speakers as well as from all participants. May this course will be blessed by God, in shaa Allah.

“I seem to have been only like a boy playing on the seashore, and diverting myself in now and then finding a smoother pebble or a prettier shell than ordinary, whilst the great ocean of truth lay all undiscovered before me.” – Isaac Newton

Thank you.

Hi friends...I am Suresh Narayanen from the Centre For Global Archaeological Research. My research interest lies primarily in the field of ethnoarchaeology. This field deals with both archaeology and ethnography in order to produce better interpretations and understanding on past human life.

My aspiration as an educator is to deliver my knowledge and experiences to my students in a more interesting way. To be honest, most archaeologists fail to impress their students in the classroom because their lectures are sometimes boring or perhaps they do not have the skills to inspire students by delivering their research outcomes in a fascinating way. Thus, as an educator and researcher (archaeologist) I would like to make my classes as interesting as possible so that my students can relate to my stories and experiences easily. A quote by Robert Frost that impressed me a lot in teaching is ‘I am not a teacher, but an awakener’.

By joining the P&P course, I hope that I can gain new insights on how to teach my students by using different approaches (perhaps some kind of teaching tools) to sustain and increase their interest in archaeology. I also hope that this course will assist me to improve myself in terms of new technology, skills and tools usage.

Thank you & see all you soon...

Salam from the Holy Land of Mecca. I am Azidah from School of Educational Studies, USM, currently the Deputy Director of CDAE. i’m sorry for not being able to be with all of you on the first week of the PnP course as I’m away for umrah. However, I believe that not a second of the programme will bore you, each of the sessions will be beneficial for you to survive in the academic world. Even if this is your 1st year or 5th years in the academic world.. or if you have been teaching for more than 10 years.. the PnP course is designed to assist you to find your way to be an excellent academic in USM.

For me, i’ve been in USM for 10 years, and I’m still learning. As an academic, learning is a process to learn about yourself and how you view learning is. As an instructional designer I believe learning by experiencing and connecting between teacher and atudents as well as using various technology, apps and devices are crucial to support the 21st century learners.

I’ll see you all in the second week of PnP and hope you’ll enjoy the two weeks with us.

My research area is learner autonomy and I am currently infusing it with sustainability. I love to impart pedagogical skills to my students for I get to design my instructions creatively. Apart from pedagogy, I adore guiding my post graduate students in their research. Although it could be very challenging, I am positive about it as it opens up a plethora of opportunity for learning. I dislike being in a comfort zone, hence gaining new experiences is certainly gratifying.
I hope to be a real academician vis-a-vis, instructional designer, researcher, facilitator, mentor, friend... during my tenure in USM. Despite having a couple of years of teaching experiences, I hope to learn new teaching skills during this course that could keep me up on my toes. Thank you!

I have been officially registered at School of Physics since 15th Jan 2018 which is last year. I was assigned to teach Modern Physics and research interest is in Nanotechnology, Nanomaterials and Advanced Materials (Graphene). I`m so sorry Prof because of late submission. I have lost my laptop the day after this email was sent to us. Therefore, I need time and space to discover all my database back. Back to the task, I was happy to be and to known as an academician, I`m a former teacher for your information. What I hope from this passion is mainly to ensure all the young generations achieve any dreams that they wish via knowledge. From here, I know that, the knowledge should be expanded by time to time. I always put in my mind, that I have to be the knowledge generator instead of knowledge provider. Therefore, through this P&P course, my aim is to get as many as I can about the skills in teaching and learning in order to give opportunity for students to generate their own idea for IQ development. And for your information Prof, I have involved in one programme under JPN P.Pinang 2017 so-called Limited Resource Teacher Training (LRTT) for Pembelajaran Abad -21. So from such programmed, I enjoy learned about P&P style in Australia. Same goes for this programmed, where I hope I can learn more and more about the techniques in our classroom in order to improve my teaching skills.

I also excited to know each other in P&P course soon.

Greetings,
I am Noor Khalidah Abdul Hamid, and based at Bio School. Food security and fish has been my interest for so long just because I like to eat fish. For that I studied fish and how to culture them for people to continue having good and sustainable fish source.

The word teaching is rather heavy for me because I am not trained to teach. Thus, knowledge sharing is something that I rather choose. Knowledge is power. However, knowledge on its own is meaningless, it need to be applied even at the very least and practiced consistently to experience the power.

p/s: My apology for late post.

Hello :-)

I’m Kamal Sabran from School of The Arts.

My area of specialization is in New Media Art. I work on research related to sound design and its therapeutic effect for people with Alzheimer’s disease. I have several years working with the industries mainly in film scoring, performance art, and exhibition curator.

Aspiration

I am very passionate on art making, creativity and innovation. For me learning and teaching is crucially important and it’s a lifelong process. As a young and new in the area of academic, I will bring these wisdom to the class rooms and share with students about how important it is to be prepared themselves with knowledge and at the same time be ready for the real world. The best only exists if we provoke and experiment with new ideas, dare to fail and learn from failures, and repeat it again and again by improving each time until we meet the solutions. For me art-science-technology is a perfect combination and this could be the recipe for the better future.

As French psychologist, Claude Bernard said,

“Art is I; science is we”

More about my art, video and music here:

https://www.youtube.com/user/kamalsabran77

https://spacegambusexperiment.bandcamp.com

Salam and hello everyone.

My name is Yasir bin Azam. I teach linguistics at the School of Humanities, and my research interests revolve around the area of morphology (especially on lexical semantics).

Being blessed with this role in life has helped me experienced and realized a lot of things about human relations (and myself as a whole). I now know that the real responsibility of an educator is not merely to teach, but more importantly is to be a “role model”. At times, this can be an overwhelming responsibility. Through this P&P course, I’m hoping not only to learn new and useful teaching/learning methods, but also to gain insights on how to be a better “role model” to my current and future students.

See you guys soon.
