One of the main reasons for wanting to teach is devotion to lifelong learning.  As an academic, I do not only get to share the existing knowledge, but I get to dig deeply into topics and learn something new along the way. By sharing the knowledge and experiences, I hope can make a difference and help guide the next generation into their future careers.

In today's era, an academician must multitask, and it can be very challenging to juggle between lectures and research. I hope that this P&P course will expose me to more tools for teaching and be able to withstand the challenges also get the important qualities an academician. 

The world of academia is always being an interesting field for me, as I think that as an educator and researcher, we have the advantage to keep on learning and constantly growing and evolving throughout the times. New knowledge is gain and shared each single day and that make our job a fascinating one. As one of the alumni of the university, I’m feeling honored to be back to USM family again. I hope I can give my best toward the university. My aspiration is to be inspired by others as a saying from Sir William Arthur Ward “The mediocre teacher tells. The good teacher explains. The superior teacher demonstrates. The great teacher inspires.”

By Joining this P&P, I hope that I can keep up with the new tools, skills and modules that can be use to attract this new generations students and also to improve myself to become a better academician.

The main reasons for me to teach is that i enjoy to be apart of teaching and mentoring. As an academician, I can aspire and lead the young generations towards the right path and to help them achieve their goals in life. I also can share my experiences and my knowledge as an electrical engineer and able to train and produces a lot of good engineers for our country.

My hope for this P&P course is that it will help me to be a better academician. I also hope that it will expose me with more new tools, skills and modules that can be use to attract the new generations of students.

Assalamualaikum and Hello everyone. My name is Mohd Ismail Isa, and I’m from Urban and Regional Planning Cluster under School of Housing, Building and Planning (HBP). My main research interests are urban design, place attachment and transportation.

As an academician, we have the great privilege and responsibility to impact our students’ lives positively. Motivating them and giving them reasons to push forward to succeed in life. 

But as a Muslim, we have always reminded the first word in Quran, “Iqra” – read, in the name of your Lord who has created (all that exists) – Al-Alaq 96: 1-5. This verse has always been my grip and my passion for teaching.

My hope for this P&P courses to gain experience and new knowledge to enhance my skills in teaching. As an academician, I hope I can integrate new ideas or tools that can be applied in my classes. As Nikos Kazantzakis said, “True teachers are those who use themselves as bridges over which they invite their students to cross; then, having facilitated their crossing, joyfully collapse, encouraging them to create theirown.” 

As an academic in USM, my biggest aspiration is to be able to advance our young minds to realize their full potential and also to shape, guide and nurture them into the right path. 

From the P&P course, I hope to learn useful up-to-date teaching and learning tools which can then, make my classroom a more interesting and effective environment for learning to happen. I also wish to discovers new knowledge & skills during this course where it can finally be translated into benefit for both, myself and also my students.

I’m Nurullizam Jamiat from the Centre for Instructional Technology and Multimedia/Pusat Teknologi Pengajaran dan Multimedia (PTPM). You can call me Zam :) I’ve joined USM for almost a year now. 

I taught a video production course last semester - one of my biggest challenges so far and several workshops organized by PTPM such as analyzing and synthesizing the literature review in instructional technology, using Canva to create simple design, and applying tools for students’ engagement (e.g. Kahoot, Padlet, Mentimeter).  

My research interest is instructional design and technology. I’m currently working on a research grant to content analyze the literature on designing problem based learning (PBL). The goal is to develop a model or a set of guideline for the implementation of PBL by school teachers. 

My aspiration as an academic in USM is to excel both on being a teacher and researcher by giving back to the community. As a teacher, I want to inspire my students to do their best. Aside from learning the content, I hope my students can apply the skills that they acquire from my class in other courses and life too (e.g. thinking skills, problem solving, self-reflection).

From the P&P course, I look forward to learn, unlearn, and relearn to improve myself as an academic. I also hope to make friends for future collaboration (teaching & research) in different fields and expertise.

My name is Norizan Binti Kadir from History Section, School of Distance Education. 

 

I am currently teaching History of Traditional Southeast Asia and my specialization is in Malaysian & Southeast Asian History. 

 

My aspiration as an academician in USM is to internalize the wisdom and meaning of education as well as the true knowledge from the Islamic worldview, thus inculcating and instilling it amongst the students. A part of the process of meaning-making in life is to understand the history itself. Soren Kierkegaard once said, “Life can only be understood backwards, but it must be lived forwards”. The true knowledge as Prof Naquib al-Attas propounded, will produce a man with a good “adab”. He explained that “adab as concisely defined is the spectacle of justice as it is reflected by wisdom”. Thus, I will try my best to deliver the knowledge as well as to equip my students with the necessary tools on how to be objective in history. With a clear and comprehensive understanding of history, then only every student will be able to become a good citizen and appreciate their country as well as to preserve the harmonious environment. 

 

In regards of this P&P course, it is definitely my hope and expectation that I would gain a maximum understanding on the 21^st-century philosophy, ideas and tools of teaching, learning and education that would enhance my knowledge on education for the benefit of myself and my students. 

 

I am looking forward to learning from the wise speakers as well as from all participants. May this course will be blessed by God, in shaa Allah.

I am Wong Yong Foo from The School of Chemical Sciences. Please feel free to call me as Wong. My area of specialization is in chromatography and mass spectrometry, specifically in multidimensional chromatography, covering fundamental method development and a broad applications base (mainly in metabolomics). Apart from multidimensional chromatography, I also innovate and develop different analytical approaches for the trace analysis of environmental pollutants, pesticides residues, food additives, contaminants, mutagens, and carcinogens. My academic teaching focused on various aspects of Analytical Chemistry, covering chromatographic separation methods, spectroscopy, capillary electrophoresis, mass spectrometry, and others.

Currently, my main aspiration as an academic in USM is to educate the young generations, in preparing them for the upcoming Fourth Industrial Revolution. Of course, as an educator, our key role is to facilitate the transfer of knowledge BUT in a more effective sense. I hope this P&P course can shed some lights on the available strategies, channels or tools that can further improve the processes for transfer of learning (i.e., teaching)! 

I want to end my intro with a quote from Nelson Mandela:

My aspiration as an educator is to deliver my knowledge and experiences to my students in a more interesting way. To be honest, most archaeologists fail to impress their students in the classroom because their lectures are sometimes boring or perhaps they do not have the skills to inspire students by delivering their research outcomes in a fascinating way. Thus, as an educator and researcher (archaeologist) I would like to make my classes as interesting as possible so that my students can relate to my stories and experiences easily. A quote by Robert Frost that impressed me a lot in teaching is ‘I am not a teacher, but an awakener’.  

By joining the P&P course, I hope that I can gain new insights on how to teach my students by using different approaches (perhaps some kind of teaching tools) to sustain and increase their interest in archaeology. I also hope that this course will assist me to improve myself in terms of new technology, skills and tools usage.

My name is Azniza Abd Aziz and I’m from School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering. 

My area of specialization is Signal Integrity.  I’ve been in industry for >10 years (J stop counting my age), R&D team specialize in Signal Integrity. I make a big step in my life switching the carrier from Engineer to Lecturer. 

Teaching, research and mentoring is always my passion, I love anything related to academic. Doesn’t matter if you have industry experience or whatsoever, the most important is to find the loop hole and generate a great collaboration between academic and industry for future generation benefit. Teaching is important but mentoring/motivate the students are part of our responsible too. (that’s what I believe, maybe some of you might disagree). Hoping in future, we can create the generation that strong in mental and physical and can stand any challenge or pressure in their life.  

Relatively new in teaching and I hope by attending this course, I can keep up to dated with the current teaching style and how to tackle the challenging with Gen-Z . I am looking forward for this course and I believe a lot of information I can learn, grab and adapt in my current profession. 

In my life, I always use tree as motivational aspiration? Why? The bigger the tree, the bigger the root. Obviously, we can’t see the underground root and we just enjoy the beauty of the tree. The stronger the root, the stronger the tree. I wish my knowledge is strong same like a tree root and hopefully I can be their (students) shades if they need one.

I now know that the real responsibility of an educator is not merely to teach, but more importantly is to be a “role model”. At times, this can be an overwhelming responsibility. Through this P&P course, I’m hoping not only to learn new and useful teaching/learning methods, but also to gain insights on how to be a better “role model” to my current and future students.

My research interests are now leaning towards the modification of electrode surfaces and the fabrication of conductive composite 3D printed electrodes for various applications including biosensors, supercapacitors, fuel cells, batteries, and semiconductors.

To be frank, the main reason I join USM as an academician is because I want to be a great teacher and researcher contributing back to society. Thus, I strongly believe that USM will provide me with a good platform to achieve that. My philosophy in teaching that I believe that teaching involves much more than the transmission of content and skills. Therefore, my ultimate goals in teaching are to create independent and self-motivated learners who are capable of self-directing their work, can critically assess the information and their own work and have critical thinking skills.

I am particularly excited to attend the P&P course that will be held next week. Hopefully, from this course, I will be able to explore new techniques, methods and skills in my teaching approaches.

I once came across a quote by Malala Yousafzai, that read “One child, one teacher, one book, one pen can change the world.” Inspired by this quote, equip with just one book and one pen, I am able to help a child to think, to learn and to gain knowledge. I also dream to inspire my fellow young engineers to follow the path of engineering and to show them how beautiful it is. 

From this P&P course, I hope to learn how to improve my teaching methods and to attract my students in order to get them to engage more in lectures.

I’m Kamal Sabran from School of The Arts.

My area of specialization is in New Media Art. I work on research related to sound design and its therapeutic effect for people with Alzheimer’s disease. I have several years working with the industries mainly in film scoring, performance art, and exhibition curator. 

 

Aspiration

I am very passionate on art making, creativity and innovation. For me learning and teaching is crucially important and it’s a lifelong process. As a young and new in the area of academic, I will bring these wisdom to the class rooms and share with students about how important it is to be prepared themselves with knowledge and at the same time be ready for the real world. The best only exists if we provoke and experiment with new ideas, dare to fail and learn from failures, and repeat it again and again by improving each time until we meet the solutions. For me art-science-technology is a perfect combination and this could be the recipe for the better future.  

 

As French psychologist, Claude Bernard said,
