During the day, you may ask yourself questions like, "How can I encourage students to talk to their instructors?" "What do I do if students come for tutoring unprepared? " "What do I do if I don't know the answers to students' questions?" "How can I help the dependent students be more independent?" Use this padlet to (1) ask a tutoring question that has recently popped in your brain while helping a student, and (2) use your knowledge and/or experience to provide a tutoring tip/suggestion for your fellow studio staff - OR, try to answer one of the questions posted by one of your fellow staff! The purpose is to share our thoughts and help each other in the process.

Being an English studio tutor, I think one issue I've encountered is tutoring students whose grammar isn't at the level of the papers they're being asked to write, and it is daunting to give a primer on the basics of grammar as well as helping with more advanced things such as thesis statements and citing sources. At what point do you focus more on one thing without giving short shrift to the other, especially when sessions supposed to be limited?

I am thankful for all of the resources in the English Studio, and hope that when a student sees me referring to one of our books, that they learn to use our resources as well.
As far as a helpful tip, I encourage students to take pictures with their phones of any work cited example, or templates of assignments, for a quick referral source.

Angela McIntyre

If a student is hesitant to speak to their instructor, I offer to "open the door" for them by asking the instructor at the end of the class if they have a minute to speak to an individual student (who may or may not be in the class they are teaching). Then I step back totally away from the conversation and let the two of them have a dialogue. Instructors are incredibly helpful and are always willing to assist students (unless they have to leave the Studio and go to a class).

I am comfortable with a team approach for questions that students ask. Our awesome team of tutors help each other with providing insight on resources and quick answers. I believe this can encourage students to ask for help at NCC. A strong support system is one of the most effective tools we offer. I have been known to tell students we can and will "Google" for the answers. It works! Students gain confidence as they experience tutors searching for answers and "There are no stupid questions!

Due to a significant increase in walk-in tutoring, we are delivering the yellow copies to instructors daily. Please help me by making sure the Referral Instructor (student's teacher) and Class is recorded so that I can get the forms to instructors as quickly as possible.

I have the same question about grammatical and structural issues. I have several students that come to me and it is very hard to focus on the overall paper due to the help needed in other areas. I do know, however, that the "comment" option on Google docs is very helpful! That way, I can not only post a comment that they can go back and see later, but also explain the comment verbally while they are in the studio.

If a student that comes into the studio is very dependent on the tutors, I usually take a step back from helping. I let the student know that he or she needs to write the paper and that I will check on them every few minutes. I let them know to write a little and then I'll take a look at it. This gives them a chance to work on their own and better their drafting skills because tutors will not always be their to hold their hand and help them write every sentences.

In regard to the issue where tutors feel overwhelmed with tackling grammar and content issues all at once, I would suggest focusing more on the content. A lot of students tend to focus on fixing minor grammar mistakes, which might only be a few deducted points, but they don't realize that most instructors are taking off a huge amount of points for lack of a thesis statement or poor paragraph structure. If it's too much to focus on everything (which, it usually is), it's always best to focus on what's more important: the parts of the essay that count for the most amount of points. Content is almost always more important. And, if there's time, tackle the grammar last. Or if there's not enough time, use Kathleen's suggestion with inserting quick comments in Google docs, where you can give short suggestions on grammar changes. Getting better at grammar takes lots of time, and with our limited time, focusing on essay content would be more productive.
