If one resource in an ecosystem is decreased or eliminated, the whole ecosystem would not fall apart due to its biodiversity. The animals would not have a need to depend on one primary resource, and instead, could rely on other organisms to provide the same resource as well. So, if any one of the organisms of an ecosystem starts to lessen, the whole community would not fall apart and become eliminated. Therefore, the biggest reason why biodiversity is important is because it gives organisms more options and becomes less dependent on one species, so if that species were ever to be eliminated from the community, the ecosystem would not crumble.

As you have seen in a previous question in the Biodiversity Hyperdoc the ecosystem with more biodiversity handled the extinction of giraffes much better than the one with less biodiversity. Biodiversity is important for the stability of food webs. Biodiversity allows ecosystems to function properly. Without ecosystems we will not get enough oxygen, clean air and water, natural pest control, and the pollination of plants, which we eat.
