The Beginning

The Estates General was an easily made up but unfair way of voting in France. There were 3 estates: the first white was made up of church officials, the second which were the nobles, and the third which were the commoners. Only the third estate payed taxes who were the poor people. Every estate only had one vote, so the first and second always outvoted the first estate two to one. The National Assembly kept these three estates, but the votes were based on population. Since the first and second estate had less people than the third, they got less votes. This was meant to keep the first and second estate from out voting the third estate every time. The upper states obviously did not like being outvoted because now everything no longer went their way. The Tennis Court Oath was made when the third estate said they would not leave the tennis courts at the Palace of Versailles until a constitution was put in place. The King does not like this and throws all these people into prison.

The Middle

In fear of the National Assembly being dissolved, the third estate attempted to rise up against their government. They thought King Louis XVI was coming for their rights. The people successfully freed prisoners and took weapons. People marched the Palace of Versailles that October. This was done because the third estate was angry over the price of break and it was rumored that Marie Antoinette (the queen) was keeping all the wheat for herself. The commoners were also angry over how much money the Queen was spending on shopping and parties. This is a justifiable action because the King and Queen were mostly unaware of how bad it was for these people. The Legislative government try to keep all of the people happy. They want the King and the people to both be satisfied with their situations in France. This failed because France had never had a government without a monarchy before. King Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette were executed later. They were charged with treason by neglecting the people and attempting to launch a counter revolution. Robespierre then takes over and this starts the First Republic. This also caused the Reign of Terror because Robespierre convinced the people that only his believes were right in order to form the Republic they envisioned. Over 70,000 people were put to death in the guillotine. If you didn't share believes with Robespierre you were killed.

The Directory had two houses. The lower house proposed the laws and the upper house accepted or denied them. The main struggle with this is that the directory would often fail economically. Napoleon comes into power and gets rid of this Directory. He also introduces some other political changes. These changes are Napoleonic codes, elimination of estates system, freedom of religion, restoration of centralized government, new education, better relations with the Pope, and the Louisiana purchase. Napoleonic codes made laws simpler for all of France. The estates system made the government more fair for everyone. Freedom of religion allowed people to be other religions than Catholic. Before this, only rich people could go to school, but now the poor could also go to school. Relations with the Pope were not great before Napoleon came along, but they were now fixed. The Louisiana Purchase sold all of the French land in North America to the United States. These all make France better for both the French and other countries. Napoleon puts his family members in charge of any territories they own or take over. This gives him loyalty but no loyalty from the people of these territories.
