Got my idea from tis website: http://www.economist.com/blogs/democracyinamerica/2011/06/american-ideologyhttp://www.economist.com/blogs/democracyinamerica/2011/06/american-ideology
I think that the "American Dream" is a unique ideal that the U.S. has that isnt shared with much of the rest of the world. Although, there is a similar saying the Dutch have: "leven als God in Frankrijk" which translates to "living like a god in france." This basically means if you were enjoying your life to its absolute maximum it means 2 things: first, you are God, and second, you're in France. So I don't think the "American Dream" can be anywhere else, "Americans are exceptional because, unlike other countries' citizens, they believe they are exceptional."

I chose a photo of Laocoön and his sons that I took on a trip to Rome because I thought It'd be more interesting (also because I do not have the book with me.) I think the purpose of this sculpture was to both tell a story and give a warning to the people seeing it. It tells the story of Laocoön, who was a priest of Apollo, and his sons who were killed because he had married when he should have been celibate. It gives a warning by showing what happens when you do not follow the rules of priesthood, as well as any law.

For function, a medieval cathedral is used as symbols of religious power, influence and wealth. A hindu temple is used as a place of worship, meeting other hindu, and retaining culture. I chose this photo because it can be considered "vulgar" or more likely "not tasteful" yet it very important and can be considered "sacred" for its political statement.
