Gandhi was appalled by the discrimination that he was experienceing as an Indian immigrant in South Africa. On a train voyage to Pretoria, he was thrown out of a first-class railway compartment and beaten up by a white stagecoach driver after refusing to give up his seat for a European passenger. Martin Luther King Jr. was influenced by Gandhi because he always referred to him as "the guiding light of our technique of non-violent social change ". Gandhi and King had a similar way of protesting against what he believed was right. And for years, black students protested the window's presence, and the school refused to remove it. Menafee kept his head down as he kept on sweeping. His job as a maintenance worker in the college, named after former Vice President John C. Calhoun, who advocated for slavery, depended on it. But one day, Menafee said he decided he couldn't take it anymore. As he swung the broomstick, and shattered the glass, he thought, ¨thought, I'm tired of looking at this, I'm about to break this, it's the 21st century, why do I have to go to work and look at this?¨
