Cornelius Vanderbilt was the son of two Dutch immigrants who came to the United States. As a child he went to school very briefly and when he became a teenager, he began to work with his father. They both worked in the transportation of cargo on ferries and this was where Cornelius began to learn about boats and such. When he was 19 he married his cousin and they had thirteen children. Vanderbilt had been working in the steamboat business ever since he was little so when he grew up he already knew a great deal about the business. He decided to later create his own steamboat business. He was very competitive when it came to his work and gained a reputation for being great at what he did. Later on, he moved on to the railroad business where he was also very successful.
History.com Staff. "Cornelius Vanderbilt." History.com. A&E Television Networks, 2010.

Vanderbilt obtained his wealth by working hard in the business he had been working in since he was young. Vanderbilt was very smart and learned as much as he could about the business which later inspired the idea to create his own business in which he was very successful.
History.com Staff.

Vanderbilt did not give to charity much at all. The only known charity he gave wholeheartedly to was the fund to create Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN. He gave over $1 million in order to create this school. Other than that, Vanderbilt did not give his money away to any charity nor did he give philanthropic donations.

History.com Staff.

Vanderbilt did not have many fancy mansions or a lot of possessions like the rest of the Robber Barons. Most of them owned extremely lavish and luxurious mansions which they called homes, but Vanderbilt did not do that. Nor did he give much of his money to charities like the rest of the Robber Barons.
History.com Staff. "Cornelius Vanderbilt." History.com. A&E Television Networks, 2010.
