Trust vs mistrust

Erickson said, "If trust predominates, as it should, children develop hope: the belief they can fulfill their needs and obtain their desires." While this age is from 0-2 so no one can remember anything from this, I think how I have developed into a person has shown that I was well cared for in my infant stage. When first meeting people I trust them right away, they have my trust to start and have to do something wrong to lose it. That could be considered overtrusting but it was how I was raised, that all people are good in nature until proven otherwise.

"As children are better able to make their wishes understood, they become more powerful and independent". I think I was able to explore and make my own decisions at this age when looking at pictures I had plenty of different outfits of all kinds, which shows that I was curious. I pride myself on having good confidence in myself in the years now, so something must have gone right for me at this stage. Erickson says that the infant stage is the most important but I think when you start to explore and can choose things is more important.

"This conflict marks a split between two parts of the personality: the part that remains a child, full of exuberance and a desire to test new powers, and the part that is becoming an adult, constantly examining the propriety of motives and actions." I can remember being a kid and wanting to be Peter Pan, I tried to stay a boy forever and not grow up. Looking back now I can see that I was between being a young adult and a kid. The transition can be scary when more tasks are assigned to you and you have to become more independent, but it is a crucial part of life.

"A major determinant of self-esteem is children’s view of their capacity for productive work, which develops in the fourth stage of psychosocial development:" I think an important first step in many young boys' lives is when they start to compare themselves to others. The most important thing to a grade school boy is to be fast, whoever is the fastest is the boss. This is an age where comparing starts but it is not a good thing. It can really hurt your self-esteem and that can affect you later in life.

"Adolescents who resolve the identity crisis satisfactorily develop the virtue of fidelity: sustained loyalty, faith, or a sense of belonging to a loved one or to friends and companions." I think this stage lasted a little longer than till 18 as I was still searching for my role in life in my early years of college. Now on my third major change, I can confidently see a path and purpose in life. I think this in a time in people's lives where they can experiment and try new things, failure in this part of your life should be encouraged and should not be something that scares you away

"Intimacy is the ability to be able to open up romantically and emotionally to those closest to the individual. Those with intimacy have strong relationships with others." I have a group of close friends that I would consider family. We are very close and have been for a long. I think relationships like this are so important in life because going through it alone makes the next stages lonely.

Generativity versus Stagnation

"Generativity refers to making a positive impact and contributing to the world, such as through raising children, mentoring others, or engaging in meaningful work. Stagnation, on the other hand, represents feeling stuck and unproductive, lacking a sense of purpose." In this stage you find yourself with more free time than you have ever had. A lot of people will hit a midlife crisis at this stage and that's what you have to avoid. It is important to keep friends and hobbies to keep you busy after retirement, or else you can feel as if you are just drifting. My great-aunt is a good example she is 62 and travels with her friends more than anyone I know, she is always on the go.

"At this stage, individuals review their lives, either with satisfaction or regret". This stage can be the most rewarding or the scariest. I think the goal in this stage is to be able to share wisdom with the younger generation, like grandkids. It is important to lead a good life with good people around you or you could end up alone with regret. This stage is also scary because of how close you are to death, something that seems so far away now. In this stage I wish to feel at peace with my life, nobody truly ends life with no regrets but the point is to have acceptance at this stage.
