Flow is the musical consistency or how it connects to different parts/moods of the song. For example the song "I'll Be Seeing You" performed by Frank Sinatra emulates flow in various areas. The beginning has a lot of instruments loudly come in at the same time, but they all rest or lower their dynamics to a pianissimo at the same time afterwards to allow Sinatra to take the main stage and be heard. Each instance this happens is a sudden interaction with the music, but there is never empty space. Either Frank or the instruments have the floor to perform which keeps both from losing their worth because you can hear it while their parts flow in and out of each other. An article written by Raymond MacDonald, Charles Byrne, and Lana Carlton also touched on who controls certain parts of a song in the quote “flow is...the individual’s sense of control within that activity.” This helps argue the flow in this piece because the music and lyrics weave in and out of each other while taking and relinquishing control. I love this because it seems that songs nowadays have barely audible lyrics, but this song balances both good instrumentals and lyrics which is really important to me. The next verse all of the instruments stop playing the same thing they were before and do something different, but you hardly notice. The strength and dynamics of the song jump, but because of the way the whole band changes their mood in sync it feels right. It flows into the next part of the song (story), and it has a different mood. A Harvard article by Andrew Friedman supports this by saying“The meaning partly resides in the very way one step leads to another, in other words, it’s flow.” This supports flow connecting with meaning which is a big part of our paper.
