When Nick meets Jordan in Chapter One, his physical attraction to her is clear as he "enjoyed looking at her". Similarly to Gatsby being attracted to Daisy's voice and wealth, Nick is pulled to Jordan by her posture and her "wan, charming, discontented face". Later in the chapter, when Daisy claims that she'll "sort of—oh—fling you together [Nick and Jordan], Nick doesn't protest and this perhaps could be because Jordan can be considered a step up in money and status for Nick. This shows the reader that he is ambitious and class-conscious, despite the way he describes himself as someone who "reserves all judgements".

When Sally meets Brian, his lack of shock regarding her appearance and voice causes her to continue to amplify the false aspects of her past.
Brian's calm approach towards Sally at the door of the apartment evokes the response "you're meant to think I'm a woman of international mystery", and Brian still doesn't respond how Sally is used to people reacting to her.
