A graduate of Oregon State University, Dr. Ashok Pinnamaraju has spent more than a decade building a successful career as a pharmacist. Most recently, Dr. Ashok Pinnamaraju assumed ownership of the Williamson Road Pharmacy in Roanoke, Virginia, where he offers prescription compounding services to members of the local community.

Before the introduction of mass pharmaceutical production more than 60 years ago, pharmacists compounded the majority of medications. They prepared customized prescriptions that fit the specific needs of each patient. Though the practice is less common today, prescription compounding still serves as an excellent way for pharmacists to ensure that patients receive the exact medication they need.

Pharmacists create compounded medications using a prescription from a patient's doctor. Following this guideline, they combine ingredients in a manner that creates a precise dosage and strength for the patient. With compounding, pharmacists can alter a medication to improve its efficacy and make it easier to take. For example, they can leave out certain ingredients to address patient allergies. They can also add flavor to make medications taste better, which is particularly useful for young patients.

Moreover, prescription compounding provides an effective alternative to most standard medications, which come in only a handful of doses.
