Read the following article on a Texas student arrested for building a clock and brining it to school and answer the questions posted.

http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/world/texas-teens-arrest-for-bringing-homemade-clock-to-school-sparks-outrage/article26378366/

Then answer the following questions (individually) and post it to the padlet:

1. How does this story illustrate the concept of individual rights vs. community rights?

2. Do more research on this article - what was the response from the public - did they support Ahmed Mohamed or the police? Why?

3. Research racial profiling - do you believe it played a part in this case?

1. How does this story illustrate the concept of individual rights vs. community rights?

The story illustrates that community rights are more valued over those of the individual, because thinking that Ahmed had a bomb, put their whole community under threat and therefore calling the police. The individual rights are not valued because Ahmed was arrested for doing nothing at all, just presenting his invention to his teacher, and if those rights were valued then he wouldn't of been sent to prison

2. Do more research on this article - what was the response from the public - did they support Ahmed Mohamed or the police? Why?

The public immediately responded with sorrow for the juvenile, and tried to show the kid as much support as possible by using their social media to express their opinion and trend it using the hashtag #IStandWithAhmed. The support ranged from celebrities to politicians and ordinary individuals who were totally against the gesture, as it was only a young child trying to express his creativity and use his imagination to innovate, which is something the modern world advocates today.

3. Research racial profiling - do you believe it played a part in this case?

Yes i believe racial profiling played an important part in this case as we learned that the kid was a muslim and from a muslim family background, therefore supposing a terrorist threat to the school. I also strongly believe that if the kid was white and was a christian, the teacher would of not felt threatened whatsoever, and even if then she still wouldn't of called the police.

1. How does this story illustrate the concept of individual rights vs. community rights?
This story show that individual rights and safety are less important in the eyes of society than group or community rights. The school was so concerned about the clock being a bomb, they did not even do a full scale investigation of the item before they called the police and arrested the boy who might have been innocent. They hardly asked any questions about the clock when the saw Ahmed with it, but just assumed it was dangerous. They protected the majority of the students from nothing. I do understand the need to protect the school community, but they made assumptions too quickly and violated Ahmed's individual rights.

2. Do more research on this article - what was the response from the public - did they support Ahmed Mohamed or the police? Why?

I think that the response from this article by the public was mixed. Some people really supported him, even famous and influential people like president Obama and Hillary Clinton. Obama invited him to show off his invention in the White House. They thought his invention was creative and that he was very smart for inventing it. Other people were more skeptical of his intentions. Some engineers and scientists have even brought up the idea that he did not even invent the clock and that it was factory made. However they did not really think that he was creating a bomb, they just thought he wanted attention.

3. Research racial profiling - do you believe it played a part in this case?

I think that Ahmen was racially profiled because the teachers did not trust that the clock was just a clock. I think some part of them thought it was a bomb because of Ahmed's name ( which is a Muslim name) and the colour of his skin.At that time there were a lot of terrorist attacks going on around the world and in the United States. Racially and theologically biased people thought that all Muslims were terrorists. If a white child brought a clock to school the teachers might not have thought it was a bomb and that child would have been praised for their scientific mind and maybe even given a few extra marks in science class. I also think that the police racially profiled Ahmed, as they did not originally think he was innocent and they did not apologize for the mix up after the fact.

Sources: http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2015/09/21/nerds-rage-over-ahmed-s-clock.html
https://mic.com/articles/125416/president-obama-stands-with-ahmed-tweets-perfect-response-after-muslim-boy-s-arrest#.DkM3SFxxl
http://www.ohrc.on.ca/en/what-racial-profiling-fact-sheet

How does this story illustrate the concept of individual rights vs. community rights?
This story illustrates the concept of individual vs. community rights by showing how an individual's rights (being able to talk to his dad, arrested without question) are violated for the "greater good" of the community because of the bomb threat.

2. Do more research on this article - what was the response from the public - did they support Ahmed Mohamed or the police? Research racial profiling - do you believe it played a part in this case?
Racial profiling is the act of targeting specific individuals due to their race. In this case, the police department were suspected of racial profiling because Ahmed was a muslim, and they were accused of associating his religion with a likeness to bring bombs to school. I believe that the situation needs to be more transparent in order for people to correctly determine whether or not it was racial profiling that caused the police to arrest Ahmed.

1. How does this story illustrate the concept of individual rights vs. community rights?

-This story shows the fact that individual rights are less important than community rights. When Ahmed brought the clock to school, he was just excited to show off what he made, however the police and the staff were quick to assume he was bringing something dangerous to school. It is still very important to make sure the public is safe , however they jumped to conclusions and violated his personal rights. They should have asked questions, done an investigation, and checked everything to make sure everything was ok before jumping to the extreme and arresting him, and suspending him.

2. Do more research on this article - what was the response from the public - did they support Ahmed Mohamed or the police? Why?

-Ahmed received a lot of public support, with the hashtag #IStandWithAhmed, and a lot of celebrities and important people tweeting their support for him, like President Obama, Hilary Clinton, and Chris Hadfield, however some did support and commend the police officers for doing what they did, because the clock looked dangerous, and people were worried for other's safety. There were also people that suspected this entire thing was set up and made to look like how it happened, just so Ahmed's family could receive money and payment from the government. However, all in all, the majority of people supported Ahmed throughout the ordeal.

3. Research racial profiling - do you believe it played a part in this case?

-Racial Profiling is when someone, or people suspect and target someone because of their race and ethnicity. The police were suspected of racial profiling, because Ahmed is muslim. I believe that the police demonstrated racial profiling, however, I would want to see their reaction if a white boy did the exact same thing, would they do the exact same thing as well?I personally do think it was racial profiling though, because of the fact that one of his teachers told him not to show anyone else, because they assumed it would freak everyone else out if a muslim boy had a ticking object in his possession.

1. How does this story illustrate the concept of individual rights vs. community rights?
The school jumped to conclusions. They didn't give him his rights to actually explain to them that it was just a clock. They believed it was a bomb so they didn't even do a real investigation. They did protect the students, but they protected them from nothing. I don't see any individual rights here. If they would have looked into this a little further before they arrested him then it would be a bit better. But this is all community rights and not a lot of individual rights.

2. Do more research on this article - what was the response from the public - did they support Ahmed Mohamed or the police? Why?
The public supported Ahmed Mohamed for the most part. I saw more positive tweets supporting him then negative ones. They thought/think that the teachers acted much too quickly on this. There are many tweets about this, how upset people are for him. The hashtag #IStandWithAhmed is trending. They understand that this wasn't right. This was racist and completely unfair.

3. Research racial profiling - do you believe it played a part in this case?
They connected Ahmed Mohamed to bombs rights away, and this may be because he's muslim. In my eyes that is racial profiling. Even though this may have been racist, no matter what race the person was I would like to think if teachers suspect a bomb they will look into it. Hopefully if this was a white boy it would have been taken care of the same way.

Many people supported Ahmed Mohamed, as they believed this was unjust due to his race, but some people supported the police as they were doing their job.

3. Racial profiling is when law enforcement officers target individuals for suspicion of crime based on the individual's race, ethnicity, religion or national origin.I believe racial profiling definitely played a large part in this case as Ahmed is the son of Sudanese immigrants, and is muslim. Many other people agree that there was discrimination, for example, when asked about the treatment of Ahmed, executive director Alia Salem said: “I think this wouldn’t even be a question if his name wasn’t Ahmed Mohamed".

Do more research on this article - what was the response from the public - did they support Ahmed Mohamed or the police? Why?

Most people supported Ahmed because many people believed it to be racial profiling. The whole thing was very controversial, and many were against the cops. There was a minority however that thought the cops were right. they attributed this to school safety regulation and police regulations about possible explosives.

3. Research racial profiling - do you believe it played a part in this case?

No for the most part, but as for the beginning where the english teacher jumped to conclusions thinking that the clock beeping in class was a bomb I do believe that racial profiling/fear motivated the teacher to contact authorities. Ahmed is a sudanese muslim, and it is hard for people to see past race, culture and religion sometimes, especially with the racial tensions built up in america after 9/11. As for the police they were doing their job. If something randomly started beeping in a backpack while you were walking by the police, you would get arrested and questioned. So in the first moments with the teacher, yes racial profiling were used, but not with the police.

1) After reading this article it was clear community rights were valued over the rights of an individual. Cases involving a threat to oneself vs. a threat to others are difficult to manage. Most often [like in this case] the good of the many is more of a priority than the good of the one.

2) Most of the support from the public was targeted towards Ahmed.
Racial profiling is a prevalent topic in the media right now. The wave of support from celebrities and individuals considered noteworthy is as much a way to make a statement about it, as it is an opportunity for them to portray themselves in favourable light. Although the support for Ahmed was justified, I think it should be recognized that there could have been ulterior motives as well.

3) For the majority of the case I don't believe racial profiling was involved. However, with that said I do think it was applied during the interaction between Ahmed and his teacher. A teacher has more jurisdiction to go through a student's backpack than a police officer does. If they were worried about what Ahmed had, they could have gone through the bag- instead of calling the police.

1. This story shows us that the rights of the community always come before the rights of an indivudual. In this case an indivudual was found to be suspitious and was immediatly taken out of the school, fingerprinted and suspended. If individual rights where favoured he would never have been removed from the school they would have had to prove him guilty first.
2. The public clearly supported Ahmed, a tweet was trending on twitter in support of him, many high level polotitans and respected faces made attemps to show support for him. I believe that most people supported him because of the history of texas, they have lots of problems with racistness and kind of have the history of being a pro white community. This is also the reason why police shootings become such big news in the southern states.
3. I deffinitly believe that racial profiling played a part in this case, partly because of the history in texas of racial profiling pro white society. I think that the fact that he was an immigrant also played a part in this situation because of all the bad news around immigrants in the states it can sometimes be hard to see them as equal even if deep down you do believe that they are the same person.

1. My opinion on this story is that the rights of the community will always prioritize the rights of an individual. Because of the way he looked and the size of his project, he was immediately removed from the school and suspended. If individual rights were to come first, they would need more proof then skin color and big objects to remove him from the school like they did.

2. Majority of everyone following the story was in support of Ahmed.

First of all, I truly think that the community rights will always have a priority on the individual rights because in this case, the people in autorithy thought that the security of others was in danger, so they priorised the group's security before the kids' rights.

Second of all, I think that mostly, the public was supporting Ahmed. BUT, what I think is that it is because Ahmed is a young grade 9 kid, because if he would have been a 40 years old man, I don't think the public would have reacted the same way, because they would have been criticizing his way of bringing the clock. What is also good to mention is that important public personalities like Obama, Clinton and Hadfield have shown their support to the kid.

In third place, I think that the fact that Ahmed has Sudanese origins did not help, because of all the bad things that is going on in the world at that moment with Muslims. However, I think that even if the kid would have been white, the teacher would have suspected him to be a danger for the rest of the students.
