A Connection I Made: Johnny Not Being Able To Show A Personality Trait Because He Is A Greaser

I had a text to self connection with Johnny on page 88, which says, “...He was sensitive and that isn’t a good way to be when you’re a greaser (Hinton, 88).” As a principal’s child in elementary school, I would sometimes be told that I was being bossy because I was the principal’s son when I would tell someone to stop doing something or leave me alone. I connected with Johnny in the way that if he were not a greaser, his sensitivity may not be perceived as a weakness. If I were not a principal son, maybe when I told someone to stop or leave me alone, it may not have been perceived that I felt entitled to be bossy.

An Inference I Made: Johnny’s Tough Expression In Scary Situations

Throughout the book, Ponyboy has mentioned several times that Johnny is beaten and disrespected at his home, and that he was once beaten badly by the Socs. On page 54, Ponyboy says, “Johnny had a blank, tough look on his face-you’d have had to know him to see the panic in his eyes (Hinton, 54).” I infer that Johnny acquired the blank expression from needing to look tough so his parents and the Socs will not prey on that weakness and hurt him even more.

A Prediction I Have: Johnny & Ponyboy Will Play Huge Roles In The War Against The Socs

On page 83, Dally says, “The Socs and us are having all-out warfare all over the city. That kid you killed had plenty of friends (Hinton, 83)...” meaning that the war is over the kid Johnny killed. Since Johnny killed him, I feel that his return will cause a huge blowup in the war, and I feel that Ponyboy will compulsively step in to defend him.

My Personal Review of the Book

The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton is a thrill ride of an adventure that puts teenagers in dangerous situations And relates it’s characters to teenagers all over the world. Fourteen year old Ponyboy is part of a trustworthy but sometimes violent gang. His life is turned completely upside down after a run in with the Socs leaves Ponyboy in a terrible situation, carrying new emotional weight along with his friend and gang member Johnny. I give this book 5 stars because it properly illustrates a teenager’s struggle with being an outsider and navigating life in a gripping way. I would recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a great new book to read or struggling with not being accepted. If I could think of one thing I dislike about this book, it would be Ponyboy’s terrible grammar, but I also like how it illustrates Ponyboy‘s speech. I highly recommend this book.
